This upsurge in violence has caused unspeakable continued suffering of Haitians,\u201d Philippe Branchat, acting UN Humanitarian Coordinator in the country said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/haiti\/humanitarian-community-haiti-deeply-concerned-about-continued-escalation-violence\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">news release<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>So far this year, gang violence in the Caribbean country has claimed more than 2,500 lives, with over 1,000 injured.<\/p>\n<p>At least 970 Haitians have been kidnapped, and 10,000 forcibly displaced from their homes.<\/p>\n<p>The latest wave of violence has also resulted in the forced displacement of over ten thousand people who have sought refuge in spontaneous camps and host families.<\/p>\n<h2>Brazen human rights violations<\/h2>\n<p>Also on Thursday, the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (<a href=\"https:\/\/binuh.unmissions.org\/en\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BINUH<\/a>) issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/binuh.unmissions.org\/sites\/default\/files\/human_rights_situation_in_haiti_quarterly_report_april_-_june_2023_0.pdf\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> outlining the dire human rights situation there, including brutal killings and lynchings.<\/p>\n<p>The report noted that frustrated by lack of security and functioning government, residents armed with machetes, rocks, and fuel cans have resorted to brutal measures to prevent gang members and anyone associated with them from entering their neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n<p>Between April and June, nearly 240 alleged gang members were killed by these self-proclaimed \u201cself-defence groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Alarming reports from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Haiti?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >#Haiti<\/a> where escalating violence killed and injured over 70 people in Port au Prince in the last two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>So far this year, more than 2,500 people have been killed and almost 1,000 have been injured.<\/p>\n<p>This carnage needs to stop.<br \/> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lDRhJr0kBH\" >https:\/\/t.co\/lDRhJr0kBH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Martin Griffiths (@UNReliefChief) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNReliefChief\/status\/1697382271580328085?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >August 31, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile some killings appeared to be spontaneous, others were encouraged, supported, or facilitated by high-ranking police officers and gang members belonging to the G-9 and allies,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>The report also documented horrifying instances of sexual violence, including collective rape and mutilation, perpetrated by gangs to spread fear, punish rivals, and target women and girls under their territorial control.<\/p>\n<p>BINUH expressed concern about the forced recruitment of children by gangs and the severe mental and psychological toll the violence is exacting on the population.<\/p>\n<p>The office reiterated its call to the international community to deploy a specialized international force to address the crisis.<\/p>\n<h2>Massive humanitarian needs<\/h2>\n<p>According OCHA, nearly half of Haiti\u2019s population needs humanitarian and food assistance.<\/p>\n<p>Despite access challenges due to insecurity, humanitarian partners are reaching the displaced people with immediate aid such as food, water, shelter, sanitation, health, and psychosocial support, particularly for victims of sexual violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people in Haiti cannot continue to live trapped in their homes, unable to feed their families, find work and live in dignity,\u201d OCHA said.<\/p>\n<p>The relief agency added that humanitarians are committed to stand with the people in Haiti and assist in providing immediate assistance to alleviate human suffering.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2023\/09\/1140317\" >Go to Original &#8211;
