{"id":24540,"date":"2013-01-14T12:00:02","date_gmt":"2013-01-14T12:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=24540"},"modified":"2013-01-14T12:00:12","modified_gmt":"2013-01-14T12:00:12","slug":"2012-summary-of-the-cultural-boycott-of-israel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2013\/01\/2012-summary-of-the-cultural-boycott-of-israel\/","title":{"rendered":"2012 Summary of the Cultural Boycott of Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\">The year 2012 was an amazing year full of many successes in the campaign for the cultural boycott of Israel. \u00a0This summary focuses on the cultural boycott with an emphasis on musical artists and groups.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The fall of South African apartheid was preceded by the movement by artists of conscience to boycott \u201cSun City.\u201d \u00a0A similar anti-apartheid movement is rapidly growing; and musicians increasingly do not want to perform in Israel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra<\/span>,<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Habima<\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Batsheva<\/span>, and the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Cameri Theater<\/span>\u00a0continued to be sent to perform abroad as \u201ccultural ambassadors\u201d for Israel. \u00a0This year people who oppose apartheid gathered in many cities to raise awareness of the complicity of these artists. \u00a0Almost all Batsheva performances were protested. \u00a0Demonstrations took place in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Italy, throughout the UK and in Edinburgh, Scotland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">January, 2012:\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Tuneyards<\/span>cancel their gig in Israel. \u00a0The lead singer\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Merrill Garbus<\/span>\u00a0is a signatory of the Artists Against Israeli Apartheid pledge.[1]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Jacques Ranci\u00e9re<\/span>, acclaimed French intellectual and Emeritus Professor of Philosophy, University of Paris (St. Denis) writes that he will not violate the boycott, and<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/thesip.org\/2012\/01\/ranciere-cancellatio\/\" >cancels plans<\/a>\u00a0to give public readings at Tel Aviv University. [2]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">February, 2012:\u00a0Award winning singer-songwriter\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Cat Power<\/span>\u00a0(Chan Marshall) cancels her gig in Tel Aviv, tweeting, \u201cMUSIC IS HEALING AND IT IS NOT HUMANE IF ALL CANNOT HAVE THE CHOICE, THE RIGHT, TO ATTEND. H E L P, A W A R E N E S S\u201d[3]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">New York Indie band\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">The Pains of Being Pure at Heart<\/span>\u00a0announce they will not play Israel. \u00a0Israel\u2019s \u201cWalla\u201d press reports the cancellation was political. [4]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Grammy-winning jazz singer<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Cassandra Wilson<\/span>\u00a0was scheduled to be the featured performer at the<i>Holon International Women&#8217;s Festival<\/i>. \u00a0Just days before her sold out performances, she politely bowed out, saying \u201cAs a human rights activist I identify with the cultural boycott of Israel.\u201d [5] \u00a0Wilson received letters of thanks signed by solidarity groups from around the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Israeli TV uses the term \u201crefuseniks\u201d to refer to\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Bruce Springsteen<\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Eric Clapton<\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">U2<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Coldplay<\/span>. \u00a0The term implies that these artists have a political reason to refuse to perform in Israel. [6]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">March, 2012:\u00a0\u00a0The cultural boycott moves to New York City as Batsheva attempts to present Israel\u2019s pretty face through dance; Adalah-NY volunteers are ready with their own performance outside the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Palestinian dancer\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Hana Awwad<\/span>writes, \u201cExhibits and performances by Palestinian artists are systematically banned, sabotaged, and closed down by the Israeli occupation. Artists themselves are targets of violence, arbitrary arrests, and deportations.\u201d [7]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Actors and artists sign onto a letter asking\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Shakespeare&#8217;s Globe<\/span>\u00a0in London to withdraw its invitation to Habima, and refuse to be complicit with human rights violations and the illegal colonisation of occupied land. \u00a0Thirty seven artists sign, including the highly acclaimed Academy Award, Emmy and and Golden Globe winning\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Emma Thompson<\/span>. [8]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Staying true to punk rock,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Zdob si Zdub<\/span>\u00a0from Moldavia keep Israel off their tour plans. \u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Punks Against Apartheid<\/span>\u00a0wrote a letter to the band in January, asking them to respect the boycott.[9]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">April, 2012:\u00a0The six member Irish band\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Dervish<\/span>\u00a0agrees to respect the cultural boycott, cancelling a series of planned shows in Israel, stating: \u00a0\u201cAt the time we agreed to these performances we were unaware there was a cultural boycott in place. We now feel that we do not wish to break this boycott,\u201d and adding, \u201cOur decision to withdraw from the concerts reflects our wish to neither endorse nor criticise anyone\u2019s political views in this situation.\u201d[10] \u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Fullset<\/span>, also from Ireland, announce that they had not been aware of the cultural boycott, and cancel their concert in Israel on the back of the Dervish cancellation. [11]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Mediterranean Delight International Bellydance Festival<\/span>was slated to take place in Marrakech, Morocco. \u00a0When it was uncovered that the festival was sponsored by an Israeli belly dancer, a campaign against normalization successfully shut down the show. \u00a0\u00a0Belly dancer\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Noor<\/span>\u00a0refuses to participate in the Israeli backed festival, and it was relocated to Greece. [12]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Qatar cancelled the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Music and Dialogue Festival<\/span>\u00a0which featured Israeli musicians, scheduled for April 30 &#8211; May 4, marking another milestone for the growing anti-apartheid movement.[13]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Singer\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Macy Gray<\/span>\u00a0responds to a letter written to the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Red Hot Chili Peppers<\/span>\u00a0asking them to boycott apartheid Israel. \u00a0Gray reaffirms her commitment to justice when she tweets to activist Tali Shapiro (Boycott From Within) \u00a0\u201cNvr give up the good fight Tali. \u00a0Yer a great human.\u00a0\u201c [14]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">May, 2012:\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Huzama Habayeb<\/span>, a Palestinian novelist, led an overwhelmingly successful academic boycott effort involving the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at Austin<\/span>. \u00a0The Center\u2019s planned book project titled<i>Memory of a Promise: Short Stories by Middle Eastern Women<\/i>\u00a0was cancelled because nearly half of the authors (13 out of 29) withdrew their literary contributions in protest of the inclusion of two Israeli authors celebrated amongst &#8216;institutionalised\u2019 Israeli literary circles. \u00a0Habayeb wrote \u201cMy overly conscious heart was heavy. I cannot accept, ethically and morally, that my voice be shared equally with writers who reflect the voice of an obnoxious occupier\u201d [15] \u00a0Regarding the large number of authors who refused to participate, the center\u2019s Director Kamran Scot Aghaie writes, \u201cOn balance, the net result is that the book project is no longer viable. Therefore, we are discontinuing publication of this volume.\u201d [16]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><i>Slumdog Millionaire\u00a0<\/i>author\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Vikas Swarup<\/span>\u00a0cancels his appearance at the\u00a0<i>International Writers Festival in Israel<\/i>. [17] \u00a0The\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Indian Campaign for the Academic &amp; Cultural Boycott of Israel<\/span>\u00a0(INCACBI) had written to him in February. [18]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Shakespeare&#8217;s Globe in London hosted Israel&#8217;s National Theatre Habima. \u00a0A twitter campaign using #loveculture developed by Israel\u2019s UK embassy was \u00a0transformed into #loveculture hate apartheid, and made global trends. \u00a0As Habima performed\u00a0<i>The Merchant of Venice<\/i>, streets were filled with people, signs, and Palestinian flags outside the Globe. \u00a0Inside, numerous people peacefully held banners, and mentioned Palestine throughout the performance. \u00a0British actor and audience member,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">John Graham Davies<\/span>\u00a0arose, delivering \u00a0Shylock\u2019s famous line during the trial scene, saying \u00a0&#8220;Hath not a Palestinian eyes?&#8221; \u2013 for a moment the production almost lost its balance. \u00a0Davies was then promptly removed by hired security personnel. [19]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">June, 2012:\u00a0\u00a0Israeli advisor to the<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Red Sea International Classical Music Festival<\/span>, tells\u00a0<i>Haaretz<\/i>\u00a0\u201cI can testify that more than once projects have been cancelled or postponed based on their &#8216;Israeliness.\u2019 And again &#8211; these things are not said crassly, no one will say: we are conducting a boycott. The word boycott doesn\u2019t exist, but the political situation of Israel also impacts this field.\u201d [20]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Grammy-Award winning tabla player<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Zakir Hussain<\/span>\u00a0of India cancels his gig in Israel. \u00a0Hussain was contacted by the INCACBI. [21]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Pulitzer Prize winner and highly acclaimed author\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Alice Walker<\/span>declines the publishing of the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Color Purple<\/span>\u00a0by an Israeli publisher, stating: \u00a0\u201cIt is my hope that the non-violent BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement, of which I am part, will have enough of an impact on Israeli civilian society to change the situation.\u201d[22]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">July, 2012:\u00a0\u00a0When a celebration promoting Israeli culture in Switzerland attempts to include the Palestinian dance troupe\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Juthor<\/span>, they withdraw. \u00a0Organizers of the<i>International Folklore Encounters Festival, Fribourg<\/i>\u00a0had intended to bring Juthor onto the stage together with the Israeli group\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Shalom Israel<\/span>. [23]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Rocker\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Serj Tankian<\/span>\u00a0releases<i>Occupied Tears<\/i>, raising awareness about Palestinian life under occupation. [24]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Ottawa musical group\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Three Little Birds<\/span>\u00a0sing\u00a0<i>Apartheid<\/i>\u00a0on CTV Morning Live, and are subsequently attacked by pro-Israel media watchdog HonestReporting Canada.[25]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Nino Katamadze\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0five concert tour was quietly cancelled, Katamadze was contacted by Boycott From Within, and plans for a five concert tour in November were scrapped. [26]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Anti-apartheid fans of Hollywood actors\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Bruce Willis<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Jean Claude Van Damme<\/span>\u00a0were relieved they cancelled their planned visit to Tel Aviv, where they were scheduled to attend a local premiere screening of their latest film\u00a0<i>Expendables 2<\/i>. [27]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Controversial reggae artist\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Sizzla Kalonji<\/span>\u00a0cancels his gig in Israel after tweeting his disappointment that Obama had awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Israeli President Shimon Peres. [28]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">August, 2012:\u00a0\u00a0The importance of the cultural boycott was emphasized when reports reassured disappointed and, at times, angry Israeli fans that the cancellations of concerts in Tel Aviv by the Swedish<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Cardigans<\/span>\u00a0[29] and by\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Lenny Kravitz<\/span>were for reasons not related to the cultural boycott of Israel. [30]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Highly successful protests of Batsheva take place in Edinburgh, Scotland. [31]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">An Israeli website announced that English electronica big beat group<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Prodigy<\/span>\u00a0would perform in Tel Aviv. \u00a0Emails from Prodigy\u2019s manager showed claims the band would perform in Israel were completely false. \u00a0The same site also made false claims that\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Jennifer Lopez<\/span>\u00a0and<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Bruce Springsteen<\/span>\u00a0would perform in Israel in 2012.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg-South Africa<\/span>, Student Representative Council passed a resolution that calls for the full cultural and academic boycott of Israeli institutions, stating they \u201cwill not participate in any form of cultural or academic collaboration or joint projects with Israeli institutions and will not provide any support to Israeli cultural or academic institutions.\u201d[32]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">September, 2012:\u00a0\u00a0Noted British theater director\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Peter Brook<\/span>\u00a0and the<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Bouffes du Nord<\/span>\u00a0theatre troop of France honored the call to boycott Israel, cancelling planned performances for December at the Cameri Theater in Tel Aviv. \u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Brook<\/span>wrote: \u201cThe fact that the Cameri Theatre has accepted to support the brutal action of colonisation by playing in Ariel [in the West Bank] has made us aware that in coming to your theatre we would appear as a support for that brutal action. This forces us to decline your invitation to perform in your theatre. The decision is entirely ours, and not to come to you, it is our free choice. \u00a0We know that there are many amongst you and in your country who share our attitude and it is them we wish to support as well as the people of Palestine.\u201d [33]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Red Hot Chili Peppers<\/span>\u00a0are asked to accept the anti-apartheid call, in a campaign that unites thousands in support for the cultural boycott of Israel. \u00a0When the RHCP refuse to cancel their gig in Tel Aviv, internationally acclaimed Lebanese group\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Mashrou\u2019 Leila<\/span>, tweets \u201cwe will not be opening for the red hot chili peppers on september 6 in beirut.\u201d[34]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Palestinian film directors refuse to participate in the filming of\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">24h Jerusalem<\/span>, and production is halted. \u00a0Twenty directors, including Israelis, pulled out of the film project in support of the cultural boycott. \u00a0Though it appeared to be a benign film about culture, it was actually funded in part by the Jerusalem Development Authority, an organization implicated in numerous violations of human rights and illegal activities against Palestinians. \u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Enas aL-Muthaffar<\/span>, filmmaker, wrote: \u201cI refuse to be part of a peace propaganda machine that continues to ignore Israel\u2019s cruel colonization of Palestine.\u201d [35]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">A survey done in Britain finds that one in four support a full cultural boycott of Israel by musicians. [36]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">October, 2012:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Pulitzer Prize\u2013winning author\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Alice Walker<\/span>, Palestinian spoken word artist\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Remi Kenazi<\/span>\u00a0and Pink Floyd\u2019s\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Roger Waters<\/span>\u00a0join dozens of other cultural workers to call for\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Carnegie Hall<\/span>\u00a0to cancel the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Israel Philharmonic Orchestra&#8217;s<\/span>\u00a0performance.[37]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Hip hop duo\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Rebel Diaz<\/span>, artist<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Narcenio Hall<\/span>\u00a0and Cairo-based art collective\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Mosireen<\/span>\u00a0boycott the two-day 2012\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Creative Time Summit<\/span>\u00a0in Manhattan because of the summit\u2019s partnership with an Israeli organization that is funded by the Israeli government.[38]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Ramallah-based Palestinian\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">MC Boikutt<\/span>, Syrian singer\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Lena Chamamyan<\/span>, Lebanese\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">MC Malikah<\/span>(Lynn Fattouh), and Palestinian\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">DJ Sotusura<\/span>\u00a0all pull out of the<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Salam.Orient\u00a0<\/span>cultural festival in Austria, because it is sponsored in part by the Israeli embassy. [39]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Turkish band\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Baba Zula\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0concert in Israel was cancelled, while obviously not all cancelling performers have the courage to publicly state their reasons, it isn&#8217;t a surprise when they don&#8217;t rebook.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Remi Kanazi<\/span>\u00a0releases\u00a0<i>Normalize This!<\/i>\u00a0on youtube in support of the cultural boycott of Israel, explaining why normalization cannot lead to positive change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">November, 2012:\u00a0\u00a0The legendary<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Stevie Wonder<\/span>\u00a0(winner of 22 Grammy Awards and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award) makes international news when he cancels a scheduled December performance at a Los Angeles fundraiser for Friends of the IDF(FIDF), an organization that raises money for the Israeli army. [40] \u00a0His statement is posted on the website of his radio station, Radio FREE KJLH 102.3FM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Cape Town World Music Festival<\/span>\u00a0had to do without one of its star acts when\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Pops Mohamed<\/span>boycotted the event because of co-sponsorship by the Israeli embassy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Ten talented young harpists bow out of the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">International Harp Contest in Israel<\/span>, leaving only 22 non-Israelis to complete in the increasingly unpopular state sponsored event. In addition, acclaimed harpists\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Naoko Yoshino<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Park Stickney<\/span>\u00a0also quietly cancelled their performances for the Harp Contest. [41]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">At least 10 international actors withdrew from the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">IsraDrama<\/span>festival, following last minute appeals asking them not to collaborate with the Cameri Theater in Tel Aviv which performs in settlements. [42]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Zebda<\/span>, a popular band from France, releases\u00a0<i>One life less-(une vie de moins),<\/i>\u00a0which draws attention to Israeli occupation, Gaza, and how children are affected by apartheid.[43]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Electronica musician and DJ\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Carl Craig<\/span>\u00a0of Detroit quietly cancels his gig in Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Ross Daly<\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Giorgos Xylouris<\/span>,<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Giorgos Manolakis<\/span>, and\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Kelly Thoma<\/span>cancel plans to play at the Israeli state sponsored\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Jerusalem Oud Festival<\/span>, stating \u00a0\u201cAfter all, we&#8217;re musicians with feelings and sensibilities, not music machines which can operate under all and any circumstances.\u201d [44]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Roger Waters<\/span>, musician and founder of\u00a0<i>Pink Floyd<\/i>, explains the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement in his address to the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">United Nations<\/span>\u00a0on behalf of the<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Russell Tribunal on Palestine<\/span>: \u201cIt aims, as many of you know, to bring non-violent economic pressure to bear on Israel to force an end to its violations, an end to occupation and apartheid, an end to the denial of Palestinians\u2019 right of return, and an end to Palestinian citizens of Israel being required to live as second class citizens, discriminated against on racial grounds, and subject to different laws than their Jewish compatriots. The BDS movement is gaining ground hand over fist. Just last week I was happy to write a letter of support to the Student Government of the University of California, Irvine, congratulating them on demanding that their University divest from companies that profit from the Israeli occupation.\u201d[45]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">December, 2012:\u00a0The London-based Jazz group\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Portico Quartet<\/span>, cancelled their planned concert for the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Red Sea Jazz Festival<\/span>\u00a0in Israel. \u00a0The band courageously voiced their support for the cultural boycott, linking fans on their Facebook page to the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Palestinian BDS National Committee\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0website.
