{"id":246136,"date":"2023-10-16T12:00:08","date_gmt":"2023-10-16T11:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=246136"},"modified":"2023-10-14T04:34:44","modified_gmt":"2023-10-14T03:34:44","slug":"exodus-to-sinai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2023\/10\/exodus-to-sinai\/","title":{"rendered":"Exodus to Sinai"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Calls from both governments and non-governmental organizations for a cease-fire in the Hamas-Israel armed conflict having not been acted upon, attention is now centered on a potential Israeli military land invasion of the Gaza Strip.\u00a0 Attack from the air have already been very destructive of civilian institutions.\u00a0 Many persons have had their homes destroyed and have taken shelter in schools and other public buildings.\u00a0 There are signs that the situation will grow more violent.\u00a0 There are no negotiations in sight.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, many people living in Gaza would want to leave in order to find safety.\u00a0 Passage to Israel is impossible; the frontier is now blocked, and the Israeli government considers all those living in Gaza as potential enemies.\u00a0 Therefore, the only frontier post open is that of Rafah, leading to the Egyptian territory of Sinai.\u00a0 However, for the moment, the Egyptian government, fearing a mass exodus, refuses to open the Rafah post to a large number of people.\u00a0 Some Palestinians\u00a0 fear that if there is a mass migration to Sinai, this would be a form of &#8220;ethnic cleansing&#8221; of Gaza.\u00a0 The population would then be replaced by Israelis.\u00a0 On a more positive note, potentially the Rafah crossing could be used to bring in humanitarian supplies for Gaza collected in Egypt and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, there should be governmental and NGO appeals to the Egyptian government to open the Rafah post to a large number of people.\u00a0 Facilities to meet the needs of refugees should be prepared.\u00a0 It is unlikely that people will spend 40 years in Sinai waiting to enter the promised land.\u00a0 However, current security is vital, and negotiations for longer-range conflict settlements need to start.<\/p>\n<p><em>______________________________________<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Rene-Wadlow--e1695369695147.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-244689\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Rene-Wadlow--e1695369695147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a> Ren\u00e9 Wadlow is a member of the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/\" >TRANSCEND Network for Peace Development Environment<\/a><em>.
