Starting on 18 October, media supporters around the world will run RSF content, in print and online, highlighting the danger posed to all media and to the public\u2019s right to know by the US government\u2019s prosecution of Assange.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>18 Oct 2023<\/em> &#8211; Developed in partnership with the French advertising agency BETC, RSF\u2019s new communications campaign features a depiction of Assange with his facial features made up of the logos of dozens of media organisations from around the world. These media are among those that initially ran stories based on the leaked classified documents published by WikiLeaks in 2010.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;As Julian Assange\u2019s fate hangs in the balance, it is more crucial than ever for media organisations and journalists around the world to speak out in support of the principles at stake. If the US government succeeds in extraditing Assange and prosecuting him under the Espionage Act, anyone who publishes stories based on leaked classified information could be next \u2013 and the resulting impact will ultimately be on all of our right to know. It\u2019s time for global solidarity in support of journalism and press freedom, before it\u2019s too late.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Rebecca Vincent, RSF\u2019s Director of Campaigns<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The campaign tagline \u201cCollateral Damage\u201d refers to the danger that the US government\u2019s prosecution of Assange poses to media around the world, as well as the public\u2019s right to information. It is also a reminder of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/collateralmurder.wikileaks.org\/\" class=\"external-website\" title=\"\u201cCollateral Murder\u201d video - ouverture dans un nouvel onglet\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cCollateral Murder\u201d video<\/a>\u00a0that was among the leaked materials published by WikiLeaks in 2010, exposing an air-to-ground attack by a US military Apache helicopter in a Baghdad suburb, which killed at least a dozen civilians, including two Reuters journalists.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/assange-media-rsf-rwb2.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-246563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/assange-media-rsf-rwb2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/assange-media-rsf-rwb2.png 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/assange-media-rsf-rwb2-150x300.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The campaign is supported by\u00a0<em>Le Monde<\/em>\u00a0(France) and\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0(UK), who were among the original media partners that worked with WikiLeaks in 2010 on the \u201cCablegate\u201d documents \u2013 a tranche of more than 250,000 leaked diplomatic cables. The campaign has also been supported by other media around the world.<\/p>\n<p>RSF has launched this campaign less than a week before Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese\u2019s state visit to Washington DC, from 23 to 26 October, where he will be hosted by US President Joe Biden. The two leaders have been urged to use this opportunity to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/usaaustralia-diplomatic-negotiations-present-savvy-political-opportunity-bring-case-against-julian\" >find a diplomatic solution<\/a> to the Assange case. RSF will also be launching a global tweetstorm targeting President Biden and Prime Minister Albanese the weekend leading up to the state visit, from 20 to 22 October.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign launch also takes place in the run-up to the final stage of legal proceedings in the UK, where <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/uk-julian-assange-dangerously-close-extradition-following-high-court-rejection-appeal\" >a hearing is expected to be called<\/a> at any point \u2013 a date being referred to as \u201cDay X.\u201d This hearing will mark the final stage of domestic proceedings, leaving only the possibility of an application to the European Court of Human Rights if the UK court rejects Assange\u2019s appeal against the extradition order.<\/p>\n<p>The US and UK are respectively ranked 45th and 26th out of 180 countries in RSF\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/index\" >2023 World Press Freedom Index<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>____________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/rsf-reporters-without-borders-logo-e1686282016405.webp\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-237071\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/rsf-reporters-without-borders-logo-e1686282016405.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"68\" \/><\/a><\/em>Reporters sans fronti\u00e8res RSF\/Reporters Without Borders RWB<em> is an international non-profit organisation governed by principles of democratic governance.
