Gaza, Dec 2023\u00a0 \u00a9 UNICEF\/Abed Zaqout<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p>21 Dec 2023 &#8211; <em>There are no functioning hospitals in the north of Gaza and injured patients who need surgery and cannot be moved are \u201cwaiting to die\u201d, the UN health agency said today, in a plea for a ceasefire to allow more aid into the shattered enclave.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"block-views-block-content-fields-block-body\" class=\"views-element-container block block-views block-views-block-content-fields-block-body\">\n<div class=\"block-content block__content\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"view view-content-fields view-id-content_fields view-display-id-block_body js-view-dom-id-2aee7b4fa0a0da4c4e9ee322958827dede1c38ea736e63b1b05b754a88eb158c\">\n<div class=\"view-content\">\n<div class=\"views-row\">\n<div class=\"views-field views-field-field-news-story\">\n<div class=\"field-content\">\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--one-column-text paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"_none\">\n<div class=\"w-100\">\n<div class=\"layout row layout-builder__layout\">\n<div class=\"col-12\">\n<div class=\"_none block block-layout-builder block-field-block-paragraph-one-column-text-field-text-column\">\n<div class=\"block-content block__content\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text-column field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>The latest grave assessment from the World Health Organization (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WHO<\/a>) came after UN teams reached Al Ahli Arab hospital and Al Shifa hospital on Wednesday, amid reports of intensifying ground operations by Israeli Defense Forces and continuing airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, in response to Hamas\u2019s 7 October terror attacks on southern Israel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cPatients were crying out in pain, but they were also crying out for us to give them water,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>said WHO Emergency Medical Teams coordinator Sean Casey, describing the scene at Al Ahli Arab hospital, where medical staff were struggling to cope with \u201cno food, no fuel, no water\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks more like a hospice now than a hospital. But a hospice implies a level of care that the doctors and nurses are unable to provide\u2026. It&#8217;s pretty unbearable to see somebody with casts on multiple limbs, external fixator on multiple limbs, without drinking water and almost no IV fluids available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the moment, it&#8217;s a place where people are waiting to die unless we are able to move them to a safer location where they can receive care.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Guterres aid call<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Highlighting the need to relieve the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, UN <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/\" >Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/a> on Thursday said that \u201cintense fighting, lack of electricity, limited fuel and disrupted telecommunications\u201d had <strong>severely restricted the UN\u2019s efforts\u00a0<\/strong>to provide life-saving aid to people in the enclave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConditions to allow for large-scale humanitarian operations need to be re-established immediately,\u201d the UN chief insisted in a tweet.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_251127\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/gaza-israel-genocide-palestine-13.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-251127\" class=\"wp-image-251127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/gaza-israel-genocide-palestine-13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/gaza-israel-genocide-palestine-13.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/gaza-israel-genocide-palestine-13-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/gaza-israel-genocide-palestine-13-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-251127\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A boy cycles through the heavily bombarded Asqola neighbourhood of Gaza City, Dec 2023<br \/>\u00a9 UNICEF\/Omar Al-Qattaa<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Growing hunger\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The high-risk mission to northern Gaza involving the WHO, the UN aid coordination office, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unocha.org\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OCHA<\/a>, the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) and the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) ensured the delivery of seven pallets of urgently needed medicines, intravenous fluids and supplies for surgery and to treat the wounded, along with equipment to support women giving birth.<\/p>\n<p>Important though the delivery of medical supplies to the north is to provide some relief to patients, much more worrying is the growing and already widespread shortage of food and water.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">REPORT: The entire population of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Gaza?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >#Gaza<\/a> is experiencing crisis levels of hunger.<\/p>\n<p>Around 26% of Gazans have exhausted their food supplies and coping capacities.<\/p>\n<p>Without access to adequate food, clean water, health and sanitation, families face catastrophic hunger and starvation.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; World Food Programme (@WFP) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WFP\/status\/1737872482328093160?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >December 21, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are behind. There is not enough food, every single person I speak to everywhere I go in Gaza is hungry,\u201d Mr. Casey said, speaking to journalists in Geneva. \u201c<strong>The time is now. We are dealing with starving people now, adults, children, it&#8217;s unbearable<\/strong>. Everywhere we go, people are asking us for food even in the hospital, I walked around in the emergency department, somebody with an open bleeding wound, an open fracture; they asked for food. If that&#8217;s not an indicator of the desperation, I don&#8217;t know what is.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Famine risk intensifies amid \u2018catastrophic\u2019 hunger: WFP<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>More than one in four households in Gaza are enduring \u201ccatastrophic\u201d hunger, according to a new food security report published on Thursday by humanitarians, including the UN World Food Programme (<a href=\"http:\/\/www1.wfp.org\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WFP<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Data from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2023\/12\/More%20than%20one%20in%20four%20households%20in%20Gaza%20currently%20face%20extreme%20hunger,%20and%20there%20is%20a%20risk%20of%20famine%20unless%20access%20to%20adequate%20food,%20clean%20water,%20health%20and%20sanitation%20services%20is%20restored,%20according%20to%20a%20new%20Integrated%20Food%20Security%20Phase%20Classification%20(IPC)%20report%20released%20today.%20%20IPC%20is%20a%20multi-stakeholder%20platform%20that%20analyses%20data%20to%20determine%20the%20severity%20and%20magnitude%20of%20hunger%20crises,%20according%20to%20internationally-recognized%20scientific%20standards.\" >(IPC) report<\/a> confirms that there is a risk of famine in the devastated enclave, unless access to adequate food, clean water, health and sanitation services is restored.<\/p>\n<p>The IPC platform analyses data to determine the severity and magnitude of hunger crises, according to internationally-recognized scientific standards.<\/p>\n<p>This figures show the entire population of Gaza \u2013 roughly 2.2 million people \u2013 is living with crisis or worse levels of acute food insecurity.<\/p>\n<p>It highlights that just over a quarter (26 percent) of Gazans (576,600 people) have exhausted their supplies and coping capacities and <strong>now face catastrophic hunger (IPC Phase 5) and starvation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>WFP has warned of this coming catastrophe for weeks<\/strong>. Tragically, without the safe, consistent access we have been calling for, the situation is desperate, and no one in Gaza is safe from starvation.\u201d said Executive Director Cindy McCain.<\/p>\n<p>According to the IPC, there is a risk of famine occurring within the next six months if the current situation of intense conflict and restricted humanitarian access persists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are not just numbers \u2013 there are individual children, women and men behind these alarming statistics,\u201d said WFP Chief Economist Arif Husain. \u201cThe complexity, magnitude and speed that this crisis has unfolded is unprecedented.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"context-un_news_large_credit type-soundcloud media media--type-soundcloud media--view-mode-un-news-large-credit\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-soundcloud field--type-string field--label-visually_hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__label visually-hidden\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"field__item\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"media:soundcloud:d45593c9-3e8d-4068-b0a9-d0f3668a0f64\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/1694375874&amp;visual=&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=false&amp;show_user=false&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;color=%23ff5500\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>Crippling shortages<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to the UN health agency, only nine out of 36 health facilities in Gaza are partially functional; all of them are located in the south.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no operating theatres (in the north) anymore due to the lack of fuel, power, medical supplies and health workers, including surgeons and other specialists,\u201d said Dr Richard Peeperkorn, WHO Representative and now acting UN humanitarian coordinator in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, speaking from Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>At Al Ahli Arab hospital approximately 10 staff \u2013 \u201call junior doctors and nurses\u201d \u2013 have continued to provide basic first aid to some 80 patients now sheltering in a church within the hospital grounds, Dr. Peeperkorn explained. \u201cSome of them are severely injured and have been waiting for surgery for two weeks or have been operated on but are now at risk of post-operation infection due to lack of antibiotics and other drugs. All these patients cannot move and need to be transferred urgently, to have a chance to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Heavy bombing and clashes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to the UN aid office OCHA\u2019s latest update on the crisis, \u201c<strong>heavy Israeli bombardments from air, land and sea<\/strong>\u201d, continued across Gaza on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The most intense shelling was reported in Beit Lahiya and multiple areas in Gaza city (north), eastern Khan Younis in the south and the eastern and western areas of Rafah city, also in the south.<\/p>\n<p>OCHA also reported \u201cintense ground operations\u201d and continuing clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian armed groups in northern Gaza, Gaza City, the Middle Area, and Khan Younis, along with the firing of rockets by Palestinian armed groups into Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Latest casualty figures from Gaza\u2019s health authorities from Tuesday shared by OCHA indicated that 19,667 Palestinians have killed in Gaza since 7 October, about 70 per cent are believed to be women and children. More than 52,586 people have been injured, according to the same source, which reported that many more were missing, likely buried under the rubble.<\/p>\n<p>The UN update also noted that two Israeli soldiers were reported killed in Gaza between 19 and 20 December. \u201cSince the start of the ground operations, 134 soldiers have been killed in Gaza, and 740 soldiers have been injured, according to the Israeli military,\u201d OCHA said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>New evacuation order<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The update also flagged a 20 December immediate evacuation order from the Israeli military covering about 20 per cent of central and south of Khan Younis city. The area was marked in an online map published on social media.
