{"id":255604,"date":"2024-02-26T12:00:32","date_gmt":"2024-02-26T12:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=255604"},"modified":"2024-02-24T04:50:39","modified_gmt":"2024-02-24T04:50:39","slug":"us-urges-un-court-not-to-order-israel-out-of-palestinian-lands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2024\/02\/us-urges-un-court-not-to-order-israel-out-of-palestinian-lands\/","title":{"rendered":"US Urges UN Court Not to Order Israel Out of Palestinian Lands"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_255605\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Palestinian-Foreign-Minister-Riyad-Al-Maliki.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-255605\" class=\"wp-image-255605\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Palestinian-Foreign-Minister-Riyad-Al-Maliki.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Palestinian-Foreign-Minister-Riyad-Al-Maliki.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Palestinian-Foreign-Minister-Riyad-Al-Maliki-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-255605\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki has urged the judges to call for an immediate and unconditional end to the occupation.<br \/>Copyright AFP Narinder NANU<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>21 Feb 2024<\/em> &#8211; The United States told the UN\u2019s top court today that Israel should not be legally forced to withdraw from occupied Palestinian territory without security guarantees.<\/p>\n<p>The International Court of Justice is holding a week of hearings after a request from the United Nations, with an unprecedented 52 countries giving their views on Israel\u2019s occupation.<\/p>\n<p>Most speakers have demanded that Israel end its occupation, which came after a six-day Arab-Israeli war in 1967, but Washington came to its ally\u2019s defence at the court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe court should not find that Israel is legally obligated to immediately and unconditionally withdraw from occupied territory,\u201d said Richard Visek, legal advisor at the US State Department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny movement towards Israel withdrawal from the West Bank and Gaza requires consideration of Israel\u2019s very real security needs,\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were all reminded of those security needs on October 7,\u201d he said, referring to the Hamas attacks that sparked the current conflict.<\/p>\n<p>The UN has asked the ICJ to hand down an \u201cadvisory opinion\u201d on the \u201clegal consequences arising from the policies and practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The court will probably deliver its opinion before the end of the year, but it is not binding on anyone.<\/p>\n<p>Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki told reporters after the US statement: \u201cI expected much more.
