{"id":256268,"date":"2024-03-04T12:00:59","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T12:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=256268"},"modified":"2024-03-02T05:49:30","modified_gmt":"2024-03-02T05:49:30","slug":"dengue-fever-surges-by-400-in-brazil-after-bill-gates-backed-gene-edited-mosquitos-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2024\/03\/dengue-fever-surges-by-400-in-brazil-after-bill-gates-backed-gene-edited-mosquitos-released\/","title":{"rendered":"Dengue Fever Surges by 400% in Brazil after Bill Gates-Backed Gene-Edited Mosquitos Released"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/dengue-mosquito.webp\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-256271\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/dengue-mosquito-300x157.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/dengue-mosquito-300x157.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/dengue-mosquito.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Money and Weaponized Mosquitos: The dramatic spike in dengue cases has prompted Brazil to purchase millions of doses of the dengue vaccine.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"css-1lv0euf\">The UN&#8217;s World Mosquito Program last year announced plan to release billions of gene-edited mosquitos in Brazil.<\/li>\n<li>That mosquito program was partially funded by the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>26 Feb 2024<\/em> &#8211; Dengue fever has spiked fourfold in Brazil in 2024 following the release of millions of <strong>gene-edited mosquitos<\/strong> by the United Nations\u2019 World Mosquito Program.<\/p>\n<p>In the first five weeks of 2024, over 364,000 cases of dengue infection have been reported, according to the country\u2019s health ministry, which is 4x greater than previous cases in the same period of 2023.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dengue outbreak in Brazil prompting emergency health measures\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V3_rv56QgQw\" width=\"690\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The dramatic spike in dengue cases has prompted Brazil to purchase millions of doses of the dengue vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>From <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/feb\/07\/brazil-dengue-fever-mass-vaccination#:~:text=The%20rapid%20spread%20of%20dengue,government%2C%20a%20ministry%20statement%20said\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Guardian<\/a><\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The rapid spread of dengue has caused 40 confirmed deaths, the ministry said, and a further 265 are being investigated.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Brazil\u00a0has bought 5.2m doses of the dengue vaccine Qdenga, developed by Japanese drugmaker Takeda, with another 1.32m doses provided at no cost to the government, a ministry statement said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Three Brazilian states have declared emergencies, including the second most populous state, Minas Gerais, and the Federal District, where the capital, Bras\u00edlia, is located and is facing an unprecedented rise in infections.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Bras\u00edlia will start vaccinating children aged 10-14 on Friday with Qdenga, the local government said on Wednesday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Cases of dengue in Bras\u00edlia since the start of the year have exceeded the total for the whole of 2023, with a rate of infection of 1,625 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared with the national average of just 170.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The UN\u2019s World Mosquito Program announced in 2023 a plan to release billions of gene-edited mosquitos in Brazil over a 10-year period in a bid to eradicate dengue fever in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrazilian health officials in five cities have been releasing clouds of lab-grown\u00a0<em>Aedes aegypti\u00a0<\/em>mosquitoes infected with\u00a0<em>Wolbachia\u00a0<\/em>bacteria, which prevents dengue virus transmission to humans,\u201d Harvard Public Health <a href=\"https:\/\/harvardpublichealth.org\/disease\/wolbachia-infected-mosquitoes-are-brazils-weapon-against-dengue\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> in August 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe country will be the first to launch a nationwide program to release\u00a0<em>Wolbachia<\/em>-modified mosquitoes, which are expected to protect up to 70 million people from dengue fever over the next 10 years.
