With England on the cusp of joining World War I, they pledged, \u201cWe are one in Christ and can never be at war.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post_content\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After Germany sunk the Lusitania ship in May 1915, US public support for joining the war swelled. But not everyone got on board.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Political activist and theologian A.J. Muste responded to his country\u2019s gearing up for war by becoming a pacifist. His views resulted in him being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/entertainment\/books\/1982\/08\/01\/aj-the-activist-pacifist\/d04b164a-639e-40d9-9b69-e8236a10c0d7\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/entertainment\/books\/1982\/08\/01\/aj-the-activist-pacifist\/d04b164a-639e-40d9-9b69-e8236a10c0d7\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw37GIqVpwHDeKbcoeKf5lRR\">forced out<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0his pastoral position.\u00a0Likewise, pacifist and social reformer Jane Addams (who later went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize)\u00a0was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/janeaddams.ramapo.edu\/2021\/12\/guest-post-jane-addams-and-the-great-war\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/janeaddams.ramapo.edu\/2021\/12\/guest-post-jane-addams-and-the-great-war\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0aPOK8jib3Xqma-OUpZPqN\">viciously criticized<\/a>\u00a0for calling the war \u201can insane outburst.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Despite the pro-war hysteria that countries use to justify their military endeavors, conscientious objection remains a courageous option for those committed to peace. As the ongoing genocide of Palestinians unfolds in front of the eyes of the world, a couple of young Israelis are choosing this brave, though unpopular, path.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cSlaughter cannot solve slaughter,\u201d 18-year-old Israeli-American Tal Mitnick\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mesarvot_\/status\/1739693975236493515\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mesarvot_\/status\/1739693975236493515&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0u9VR80Vbu7RzrkCQkvbBr\">said<\/a>\u00a0in December 2023 before receiving his first 30-day prison sentence for refusing to join Israel\u2019s military.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The same week that Tal refused for the third time and received a third term in prison, he was joined by fellow teenager Sofia Orr. \u201cI reject participating in the violent policies of oppression and apartheid that Israel has imposed on the Palestinian people, especially now during the war,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/israel-palestine-gaza-conscientious-objector.webp\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-258237\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/israel-palestine-gaza-conscientious-objector.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/israel-palestine-gaza-conscientious-objector.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/israel-palestine-gaza-conscientious-objector-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/israel-palestine-gaza-conscientious-objector-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s not the sentences Tal and Sofia are enduring that make their actions exceptional. They have options. In fact, 12 percent of conscripted Israelis get out of service through notoriously easy-to-obtain\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/sections\/israel-middle-east\/articles\/idf-conscientious-objectors\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/sections\/israel-middle-east\/articles\/idf-conscientious-objectors&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0W20aaAKLKDSJEQP_bINLa\">mental health exemptions<\/a>. Instead of the 10-year terms that Russian draft evaders face, even when Israelis are sentenced for refusing, they receive consecutive sentences with breaks in between to see if they have changed their minds.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Tal and Sofia are not being held\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/2\/18\/systematic-torture-to-be-palestinian-in-an-israeli-prison\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/2\/18\/systematic-torture-to-be-palestinian-in-an-israeli-prison&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0nFTr_DJ4Mo7EHx1JYlvCz\">indefinitely<\/a>\u00a0in overcrowded, abusive,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2024-03-07\/ty-article\/.premium\/27-gaza-detainees-died-in-custody-at-israeli-army-facilities-since-the-start-of-the-war\/0000018e-1322-d950-a18e-f3bbaa370000\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2024-03-07\/ty-article\/.premium\/27-gaza-detainees-died-in-custody-at-israeli-army-facilities-since-the-start-of-the-war\/0000018e-1322-d950-a18e-f3bbaa370000&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw069c6JR3mugUMeKPNRUXxr\">deadly<\/a>\u00a0prison facilities like incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank. But, what Tal and Sophia are doing is heroic and places them within a legacy of great peacemakers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The earliest recorded act of conscientious objection occurred in 295 A.D. when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maximilian_of_Tebessa\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maximilian_of_Tebessa&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3LUNCEkVIq1D4ZaL8uHVxW\">Maximilianus<\/a>\u00a0 refused his conscription into the Roman Army. He was beheaded for refusing to kill. Later, he was canonized as a saint.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Like Maximilianus, Austrian\u00a0farmer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/a-hidden-life-the-tale-of-an-austrian-who-refused-to-serve-hitler\/a-51613073\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/a-hidden-life-the-tale-of-an-austrian-who-refused-to-serve-hitler\/a-51613073&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1A6UDu49u78k21OywVwiAt\">Franz J\u00e4gerst\u00e4tter<\/a>\u00a0was arrested and executed for refusing conscription by the Nazis. He wrote, \u201cI find that [my hands being in chains is] much better than if my will were in chains. Neither prison nor chains nor sentence of death can rob a man of the Faith and his free will.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_258238\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sofia-Orr-France-24.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-258238\" class=\"wp-image-258238\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sofia-Orr-France-24.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sofia-Orr-France-24.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sofia-Orr-France-24-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sofia-Orr-France-24-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-258238\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sofia Orr &#8211; Photo: France 24<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWhen, in 1944, devout Quaker Bayard Rustin was sentenced to three years for refusing to serve in World War I, he devoted his prison time to racial justice work.\u201d A disciple of Gandhian nonviolence, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalww2museum.org\/war\/articles\/bayard-rustin-racial-justice-world-war-ii\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nationalww2museum.org\/war\/articles\/bayard-rustin-racial-justice-world-war-ii&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0RMQm3SvET-KzgPB0VEyec\">organized<\/a>\u00a0his fellow prisoners to resist segregation in the prison. He was so successful that the head of the prison described him as \u201can extremely capable agitator.\u201d Upon release, he traveled the country organizing communities, including the \u201cFirst Freedom Ride\u201d in 1947.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">James Lawson, also a student of Gandhi, spent 13 months in prison between 1951 and 1952 for refusing to serve during the Korean War.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sth-history\/james-lawson-1960\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sth-history\/james-lawson-1960\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw39-u1610_OFFHD4_xSmoT7\">Lawson went on to become<\/a>, along with Rustin, an essential advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Since its campaigns were broadcast on TV across America, the civil rights movement challenged the public, especially American youth, to choose between justice and segregation \u2014 between equality and oppression.\u00a0At the same time, there was a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catonsville_Nine\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catonsville_Nine&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw16ImjIiy_c3CCCVzy90bl1\">surge<\/a>\u00a0of draft evaders and conscientious objectors to the Vietnam War, including prominent leaders like \u201cgood troublemaker\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/wr\/2020\/08\/remembering-john-lewis-dont-forget-his-resistance-to-militarism\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/wr\/2020\/08\/remembering-john-lewis-dont-forget-his-resistance-to-militarism\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1YDT7Uh4KmfQbAPju0U-bG\">John Lewis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Refusing and avoiding conscription became so popular during the Vietnam War that President Nixon\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Draft_evasion\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Draft_evasion&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3qlrT-bhojvMYgeXR5PyEp\">commission reported<\/a>\u00a0that the movement was\u00a0\u201cexpanding at an alarming rate,\u201d leaving the government \u201calmost powerless to apprehend and prosecute them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">With the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2024-02-21\/ty-article\/.premium\/most-israelis-say-absolute-victory-in-gaza-unlikely-according-to-new-poll\/0000018d-cc0e-d6e9-a38d-fc1fe3ab0000\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2024-02-21\/ty-article\/.premium\/most-israelis-say-absolute-victory-in-gaza-unlikely-according-to-new-poll\/0000018d-cc0e-d6e9-a38d-fc1fe3ab0000&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2xLNFSK7L1MKKZPiLs6JQg\">majority<\/a>\u00a0of Israelis opposing an end to the war in Gaza and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/almost-4-in-10-israelis-back-a-revival-of-jewish-settlements-in-gaza-poll-finds\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/almost-4-in-10-israelis-back-a-revival-of-jewish-settlements-in-gaza-poll-finds\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw22K-EmXzp0Cd7rPOKpjI6V\">72 percent<\/a>\u00a0of them supporting no humanitarian aid, Tal and Sofia are not part of a growing popular movement, like what took place during the Vietnam War. But their contributions to peace are no less important.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Whether or not other young Israelis join them in jail \u2014 Tal and Sofia were part of a group of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.palestinechronicle.com\/200-israeli-teenagers-refuse-to-enlist-in-protest-against-judicial-overhaul\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.palestinechronicle.com\/200-israeli-teenagers-refuse-to-enlist-in-protest-against-judicial-overhaul\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1711124217580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2i30IxfMr_H_DcxQVhVLO6\">200 Jewish Israeli 12th graders<\/a>\u00a0who pledged in August 2023 to refuse military service to protest the government\u2019s effort to overhaul Israel\u2019s judicial system \u2014 what Tal and Sofia have done places profound marks on the pages of history.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Members and contributors to the Fellowship of Reconciliation include the likes of\u00a0Jane Addams, A.J. Muste, Mahatma Gandhi, Bayard Rustin, Martin Luther King Jr., Daniel Berrigan, Dorothy Day, James Lawson, and countless other brave conscientious objectors and peacemakers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Today, as the world is watching a genocide take place in real-time \u2014 as of this writing, the death toll in Gaza is approaching 32,000 and famine is setting in \u2014 FOR-USA is proud to be raising money for an ad in an Israeli newspaper lifting up two of the most important conscientious objectors of our time.
