CIJ_ICJ (@CIJ_ICJ) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CIJ_ICJ\/status\/1773376361362489490?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >March 28, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Israel to ensure aid deliveries<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icj-cij.org\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ICJ<\/a> provisional measures state that Israel, \u201cin view of the worsening conditions of life faced by Palestinians in Gaza, in particular the spread of famine and starvation\u201d, shall take \u201call necessary and effective measures to ensure, without delay, in full cooperation with the United Nations, <strong>the unhindered provision at scale by all concerned of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance\u00a0<\/strong>to Palestinians throughout Gaza\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The measures outline that the required aid includes food, water, electricity, fuel, shelter, clothing, hygiene and sanitation requirements, as well as medical supplies and medical care.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Orders to open more land crossings<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The fresh ICJ order also calls on Israel, as a signatory to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2024\/01\/1145432\" >Genocide Convention<\/a>, to undertake those measures, \u201c<strong>including by increasing the capacity and number of land crossing points\u00a0<\/strong>and maintaining them open for as long as necessary\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Additional measures call for Israel to ensure \u201cwith immediate effect that its military does not commit acts which constitute a violation of any of the rights of the Palestinians in Gaza as a protected group\u201d under the Genocide Convention.<\/p>\n<p>This includes \u201cby preventing, through any action, the delivery of urgently needed humanitarian assistance\u201d, according to the ICJ.<\/p>\n<p>The court also decided that Israel shall submit a report to the ICJ on all measures within one month.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>UN: All Member States must abide by ICJ decisions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>UN Spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric reminded journalists at his daily briefing that the ICJ operates independently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do believe as a matter of principle that all Member States abide by decisions of the court,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The ICJ was established by the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/charter-united-nations\/index.html\" >UN Charter<\/a> as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icj-cij.org\/statute\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">principal judicial organ<\/a> of the UN.<\/p>\n<p>Read our explainer on the ICJ <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2024\/01\/1145392\" >here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2024\/03\/1148096\" >Go to Original &#8211;
