{"id":259909,"date":"2024-04-22T12:00:54","date_gmt":"2024-04-22T11:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=259909"},"modified":"2024-09-23T14:36:47","modified_gmt":"2024-09-23T13:36:47","slug":"irish-nobel-laureate-mairead-maguire-nominates-burmese-activist-maung-zarni-for-2024-npp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2024\/04\/irish-nobel-laureate-mairead-maguire-nominates-burmese-activist-maung-zarni-for-2024-npp\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish Nobel Laureate Mairead Maguire Nominates Burmese Activist Maung Zarni for 2024 NPP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/nobel-peace-logo-e1506853620930.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-66603 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/nobel-peace-logo-e1506853620930.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"96\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Forces of Renewal Southeast Asia (FORSEA) and the Free Rohingya Coalition (FRC) jointly announced Maguire\u2019s nomination, based on Zarni\u2019s \u201cimpactful and tireless activism for peace and harmony among human communities over three decades.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[<strong>From TMS Editor:<\/strong> Both Mairead Maguire and Maung Zarni are members of the TRANSCEND Network for Peace Development Environment and we are jubilant with the nomination, as our founder, the late Johan Galtung, was never awarded the distinction despite being nominated numerous times.]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>16 Apr 2024<\/em> &#8211; The renowned Northern Irish peace activist Mairead Corrigan Maguire (herself recipient of the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize) has nominated the UK-exiled Burmese human rights activist and genocide scholar Dr Maung Zarni for the prestigious prize.<\/p>\n<p>On the eve of the Burmese traditional New Year this week, the Forces of Renewal Southeast Asia (FORSEA) and the Free Rohingya Coalition (FRC) jointly announced Maguire\u2019s nomination, based on Zarni\u2019s \u201cimpactful and tireless activism for peace and harmony among human communities over three decades\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Maguire\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/eg9dn5hbx3e.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Mairead-Corrigan-Maguire-Nobel-Peace-Prize-nomination-letter-for-Dr-Maung-Zarni-17-Jan-2024.pdf\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nomination letter<\/a> to the Nobel committee highlighted Zarni\u2019s activism both for democracy in Myanmar and for \u201cnon-violence campaigners for peace and freedom from Tibet, East Timor (now Timor Leste), Nigeria, India, Thailand, Palestine and the Jewish diaspora\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While Zarni says that the Nobel prize \u201chas been deeply tarnished\u201d by some awards, \u201cof which the late Henry Kissinger was only the most infamous\u201d, he adds, that \u201cas a radical anti-imperialist, I am most proud to be Maguire\u2019s choice\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mairead Maguire has long been a champion of anti-imperialist causes, including standing up for Israeli nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu, the oppressed Palestinians and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Among her past nominees are Edward Snowden, Chelsea Manning and Julian Assange.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_260075\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Mairead-Maguire-in-her-office.webp\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-260075\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-260075\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Mairead-Maguire-in-her-office-300x171.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-260075\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TRANSCEND Member 1976 Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire in her office.<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-note\">\n<div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>Marilyn Langlois, fellow member of Johan Galtung\u2019s TRANSCEND Network wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cZarni became part of our family when he came to the US in 1988, and drew my daughter and me into his pioneering activism with the Free Burma Coalition, opposing military dictatorship in his home country, a few years later.\u00a0 Ever since then, he has been a teacher and role model for me in advocacy for positive peace\u2013not just the absence of war but affirming the dignity and self-determination of all people suffering the ravages of oppression and structural violence.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr Helen Jarvis (Cambodia), Vice-President of the Permanent People\u2019s Tribunal, and recipient of the 2021 Lifetime Award from the International Association of Genocide Scholars says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cForthright and unabashed straightforwardness mixed with compassion were the characteristics that first struck me, when in 2013 in Bremen, Germany, I worked with Zarni as a fellow judge on the Second People\u2019s Tribunal on Sri Lanka. Over the past decade I have been proud to work alongside him in many different campaigns, witnessing his continued principled commitment to stand the oppressed of this earth in the fight for freedom and justice.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Isham Rais, Malaysian film director, stand-up comedian, political and social activist, and FORSEA co-founder wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI have known Zarni \u2013 The Enemy of the State \u2013 via FORSEA \u2013 an academician \u2013 a solid Public Intellectual \u2013 a thoroughbred activist not only for Myanmar but for the human race. He raised the Rohingya issue globally and stood up for the rights of the Palestinians \u2013 yes he is the enemy of oppression.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dato Sri Saifuddin Abdullah, Malaysian Member of Parliament, former Foreign Minister and Chairman of Parti BERSATU\u2019 International Bureau said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cZarni is an activist-academic who is very committed to the struggle of the Myanmar people to uphold freedom, human rights and democracy. His approach is consultative and inclusive, with a clear people-centred end game. He does not limit his works only for his countrymen and women, but extended it to the oppressed around the globe.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Penny Green, FAcSS, Professor of Law and Globalisation &amp; Director, International State Crime Initiative | Queen Mary University of London said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;In the world of peace activism Zarni is simply outstanding. Fearless, compassionate and with a razor sharp intellect, his life has been dedicated to improving the lives of those most vulnerable to the vagaries of genocide and state violence. Zarni now serves as an adviser to Burma\u2019s oldest ethnic resistance organization, the Karen National Union (founded in 1947).<\/p>\n<p>Zarni was born and raised in Mandalay (Burma) in an extended military family to an educator mother and socially conscious businessman father under General Ne Win\u2019s \u201csocialist\u201d military dictatorship. As a young teenager, he learned community organizing from his parents who led self-help communal initiatives for their residential neighbourhood. In July 1988, on the eve of the nationwide uprisings known as 8.8.88 (after the uprising date 8 August 1988), Zarni left his native Myanmar for California, USA where he enrolled as a foreign student on a Non-resident Tuition Scholarship offered by the Graduate Division of the University of California at Davis.<\/p>\n<p>During his 17-years as an asylee in the US, Zarni held a tenure-track assistant professorship in educational foundations at National-Louis University in Chicago, a position he gave up to be a full-time activist based in Berkeley, California. He was married to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/specials\/packages\/article\/0,28804,1841778_1841781_1841805,00.html\" >Annie Leonard<\/a>, a renowned American environmentalist and the acclaimed author of \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.storyofstuff.org\/\" >The Story of Stuff<\/a>\u201d. Together they have a daughter Dewi (24), an activist legal researcher who specializes in prisoners\u2019 rights in California.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, Zarni relocated to the United Kingdom as a visiting research fellow in the Department of International Development at Oxford University, in hopes of resuming his academic career. He subsequently worked as an associate professor of Asian Studies at the Universiti Brunei Darussalem, but <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.universityworldnews.com\/post.php?story=20130118143248468\" >resigned over censorship<\/a> of his public engagement on the Burmese genocide of Rohingya. Post-resignation, he also declined an offer of a Scholars-at-risk fellowship at the London School of Economics in 2014 to do anti-genocide activism full-time.<\/p>\n<p>He re-married a fellow British scholar <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/people\/person\/Natalie-Brinham-9ce8b1bf-a292-4559-9127-c489ab7a6ef2\/\" >Dr Natalie Brinham<\/a>, a senior research associate with the Migration Mobilities Bristol, a specialist research institute at the University of Bristol. Together, they co-authored a groundbreaking 3-year study \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.law.uw.edu\/wilj\/vol23\/iss3\/8\/\" >The Slow-Burning Genocide of Myanmar\u2019s Rohingya<\/a>\u201d published by the University of Washington School of Law in 2014.
