{"id":26036,"date":"2013-02-25T12:00:15","date_gmt":"2013-02-25T12:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=26036"},"modified":"2013-03-04T20:07:50","modified_gmt":"2013-03-04T20:07:50","slug":"tragicomic-french-president-francois-hollande-awarded-unesco-peace-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2013\/02\/tragicomic-french-president-francois-hollande-awarded-unesco-peace-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"[Tragicomic] French President Fran\u00e7ois Hollande Awarded UNESCO Peace Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>The President of France, Fran\u00e7ois Hollande, will receive the United Nations cultural agency\u2019s peace prize this year for his \u201cvaluable contribution to peace and stability in Africa,\u201d it was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/new\/en\/media-services\/single-view\/news\/french_president_hollande_to_receive_felix_houphouet_boigny_peace_prize\/\" >announced<\/a> today [21 Feb 2013].<\/i><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter analyzing the global situation, it is Africa that held the attention of the Jury with the various threats affecting the continent,\u201d said the former President of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano, who chaired the Jury of the F\u00e9lix Houphou\u00ebt-Boigny Peace Prize.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving assessed the dangers and the repercussions of the situation on Africa, and on Mali in particular, as well as on the rest of the world, the Jury appreciated the solidarity shown by France to the peoples of Africa,\u201d Mr. Chissano said after the Jury\u2019s meeting in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>The award, created in 1989 by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/new\/en\/unesco\/\" >UNESCO<\/a>), honours people, institutions and organizations that have contributed significantly to the promotion, research, preservation or maintenance of peace. It is named for the first president of C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Mali was occupied by radical Islamists after fighting broke out in January 2012 between Government forces and Tuareg rebels. The conflict uprooted hundreds of thousands of people and prompted the Malian Government to request assistance from France to stop the military advance of extremist groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Jury condemns the violation of Mali\u2019s territorial integrity, the violation of human rights, the taking of hostages and the destruction of the cultural heritage of humanity in Timbuktu,\u201d Mr. Chissano said. \u201cThe Jury therefore decided to award the F\u00e9lix Houphou\u00ebt-Boigny Peace Prize to Mr. Fran\u00e7ois Hollande, President of the French Republic, for his great contribution to peace and stability in Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Previous winners of the prize include former Brazilian president Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva; Nelson Mandela and Frederik W.
