Eliot\u00a0 <\/span><\/a>1888 &#8211; 1965<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"long-line\">The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It isn\u2019t just one of your holiday games;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">You may think at first I\u2019m as mad as a hatter<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">First of all, there\u2019s the name that the family use daily,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo, or James,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey\u2014<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 All of them sensible everyday names.<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter\u2014<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But all of them sensible everyday names,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">But I tell you, a cat needs a name that\u2019s particular,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A name that\u2019s peculiar, and more dignified,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum\u2014<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Names that never belong to more than one cat.<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">But above and beyond there\u2019s still one name left over,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And that is the name that you never will guess;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">The name that no human research can discover\u2014<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">When you notice a cat in profound meditation,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The reason, I tell you, is always the same:<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 His ineffable effable<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Effanineffable<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"long-line\">Deep and inscrutable singular name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>_______________________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/tseliot-poetry.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-260740 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/tseliot-poetry-e1713885683317.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"90\" height=\"88\" \/><\/a>Born in Missouri on 26 Sep 1888, T.
