{"id":26101,"date":"2013-03-04T12:00:33","date_gmt":"2013-03-04T12:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=26101"},"modified":"2013-03-13T15:49:55","modified_gmt":"2013-03-13T15:49:55","slug":"whaling-conflict-near-antarctica-intensifies-japan-accused-of-using-military-ship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2013\/03\/whaling-conflict-near-antarctica-intensifies-japan-accused-of-using-military-ship\/","title":{"rendered":"Whaling Conflict Near Antarctica Intensifies: Japan Accused of Using Military Ship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Watch spectacular <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2013\/03\/whale-war-2013\/\" >Sea Shepherd Video<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/images.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26283\" alt=\"images\" src=\"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/images.jpg\" width=\"299\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>Whaling conservation organization, Sea Shepherd, has accused Japan of bringing a military style ship to the conflict in waters off Antarctica.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>25 Feb 2013 &#8211; The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/opinion\/political-news\/military-icebreakers-arrival-adds-to-whaling-conflict-20130225-2f22e.html\"  target=\"_blank\"><i>Sydney Morning Herald<\/i><\/a> reports the Japanese military ice breaker, Shirase, approached Mackenzie Bay in Australian Antarctic Territory, far south-west of Perth, where Sea Shepherd ships \u2014 the Bob Barker and Sam Simon \u2014 and whaling ships, the Nisshin Maru and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.inquisitr.com\/427421\/south-korea-ditches-scientific-whaling-plans\/\" >Korean<\/a> tanker, Sun Laurel \u2014 were engaged in an intensifying conflict.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.com.au\/breaking-news\/world\/whaling-conflict-heats-up-near-antarctica\/story-e6frfkui-1226585608478\"  target=\"_blank\"><i>AAP<\/i><\/a>, the Sea Shepherd claims the factory ship, Nisshin Maru, hit Bob Barker twice on Monday afternoon, causing the vessel to collide with the Sun Laurel tanker. \u00a0<i>The Sydney Morning Herald<\/i> records Sea Shepherd captain Paul Watson saying, \u201cConcussion grenades are being deployed against the Bob Barker, and near the tanker. They have made another run, ramming the Sam Simon in the port quarter. It\u2019s a very intense situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Australian Environment minister, Tony Burke has asked Japan to confirm if the Shirase is connected to the whaling fleet. Mr. Burke said, \u201dJapan has told the government that the Shirase is not involved in supporting their so-called scientific whaling fleet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2013-02-26\/japanese-whaling-vessel-being-rammed-by-sea-shepherd-fleet\/4539718\"  target=\"_blank\"><i>ABC News<\/i><\/a><i> <\/i>reports the Japanese whaling body, The Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR), has accused Sea Shepherd of ramming the Nisshin Maru while it was trying to refuel, calling the act \u201cmalicious and unacceptable.\u201d Video footage from the ICR does indicate a Sea Shepherd ship may have hit a whaling vessel. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/news\/nation\/sea-shepherd-says-southern-ocean-whale-hunting-to-be-cut-short\/story-e6frg6nf-1226582424942\"  target=\"_blank\"><i>The Australian<\/i><\/a> reports that, due to the conflict, Japan has called a temporary suspension of their whaling operations. Sea Shepherd activists are celebrating this as a victory that may mean a shortened whaling season. \u00a0Sea Shepherd manager, Simon Ager told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themercury.com.au\/article\/2013\/02\/22\/372916_tasmania-news.html\"  target=\"_blank\"><i>The Mercury<\/i><\/a> that while the Japanese operations had paused, \u201c\u2026it does not look like they are going anyway but instead deciding their next move,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>If the Shirase remains in Antarctic waters with intention to engage in conflict, Mr. Watson says it is at risk of violating the Antarctica Treaty. The Treaty states <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.inquisitr.com\/478794\/colony-of-9000-penguins-discovered-in-antarctica-by-nasa-satellite\/\" >Antarctica<\/a> and its outlying areas are only to be used for peaceful purposes and prohibits any military activity.
