Sulzberger, executive editor Joe Kahn, and international editor Philip Pan, calling for a &#8220;thorough and independent review&#8221; into the article &#8220;&#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/28\/world\/middleeast\/oct-7-attacks-hamas-israel-sexual-violence.html\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Screams Without Words&#8217;: Sexual Violence on Oct. 7<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/documents\/adc3143c-ecc7-477f-8a38-a76308b18cca.pdf?itid=lk_inline_manual_2\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The letter <\/a>urged the newspaper to form a commission made up of journalism experts to examine the &#8220;reporting, editing, and publishing processes&#8221; for the story.<\/p>\n<p>The article came under scrutiny shortly after it was published, having been reported by not only international correspondent Jeffrey Gettleman but also two inexperienced freelancers based in Israel. One, Anat Schwartz, is a &#8220;former air force intelligence official&#8221; with whom the <em>Times<\/em> cut ties after it was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/anat-schwartz\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> revealed<\/a> that she had &#8220;liked&#8221; a social media post calling for Gaza to be turned into a &#8220;slaughterhouse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It appears that extraordinary trust was invested in these individuals andthe <em>Times<\/em> would benefit from publicly explaining the circumstances that justified such unusual reliance on freelancers for such an important story,&#8221; wrote the professors, including Mohamad Bazzi of New York University, Shahan Mufti of University of Richmond, and Jeff Cohen, who retired from Ithaca College.<\/p>\n<p>Mufti joined Northwestern University assistant professor Steven Thrasher in gathering the signatures, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/media\/2024\/04\/29\/new-york-times-oct-7-journalism-professors-letter\/\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> told<\/a><em> The Washington Post <\/em>that after &#8220;serious consideration and deliberation,&#8221; the academics &#8220;came to the conclusion that this is necessary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to questions that have been raised about Schwartz&#8217;s and Sella&#8217;s experience and bias, the professors pointed to the newspaper&#8217;s acknowledgment on March 26 that &#8220;new video evidence &#8216;undercut&#8217; some important details&#8221; in &#8220;Screams Without Words,&#8221; as well as Gettleman&#8217;s comment suggesting he did not view the information in the story as hard &#8220;evidence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Can the paper &#8216;establish&#8217; fact if its own reporter does not consider his information &#8216;evidence&#8217;?&#8221; asked the professors.<\/p>\n<p>In March, a spokesperson for Kibbutz Be&#8217;eri <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2024\/03\/04\/nyt-october-7-sexual-violence-kibbutz-beeri\/\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a><em>The Intercept<\/em> that victims of the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel were not sexually assaulted, and the family of one woman who was a key figure in &#8220;Screams Without Words&#8221; has <a href=\"https:\/\/mondoweiss.net\/2024\/01\/family-of-key-case-in-new-york-times-october-7-sexual-violence-report-renounces-story-says-reporters-manipulated-them\/\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denied<\/a> the report&#8217;s graphic details of sexual abuse were true.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Intercept <\/em>also <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2024\/02\/28\/new-york-times-anat-schwartz-october-7\/\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that in reporting on the alleged sexual assaults, Schwartz relied on interviews with a rescue group that was &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2024-01-31\/ty-article-magazine\/.premium\/death-and-donations-did-the-volunteer-group-handling-the-october-7-dead-exploit-its-role\/0000018d-5a73-d997-adff-df7bdb670000\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">documented<\/a> to have mishandled evidence and spread multiple<a href=\"https:\/\/mondoweiss.net\/2023\/12\/zaka-is-not-a-trustworthy-source-for-allegations-of-sexual-violence-on-october-7\/\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> false stories<\/a> about the events of October 7, including debunked allegations of Hamas operatives beheading babies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Al Jazeera <\/em>journalist Laila Al-Arian called Monday&#8217;s letter a &#8220;major development&#8221; and urged the<em> Times<\/em> to &#8220;do the right thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is a major development. It\u2019s been weeks since \u201cScreams without Words\u201d fell apart.
