According to official vote tallies, <em>The Washington Post<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2024\/06\/02\/mexico-president-election-sheinbaum-galvez\/\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, Morena and its allies &#8220;appeared close to winning a supermajority in Congress, which would allow them to change the constitution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We imagine a plural, diverse, and democratic Mexico,&#8221; Sheinbaum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/jun\/02\/mexico-elections-first-female-president-violence\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> cheering supporters on Sunday. &#8220;Our duty is and will always be to look after each and every Mexican, without distinction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>David Adler, co-general coordinator of Progressive International, called Sheinbaum and Morena&#8217;s win &#8220;epic, whopping, [and] historic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">And here are the numbers for the Mexican legislature. An epic, whopping, historic victory for MORENA and the \u2018Fourth Transformation\u2019 \ud83e\udd2f <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3pCB1HvefS\" >https:\/\/t.co\/3pCB1HvefS<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/EA2bKXb2CL\" >pic.twitter.com\/EA2bKXb2CL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; David Adler (@davidrkadler) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davidrkadler\/status\/1797511282553401757?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >June 3, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>While Sunday&#8217;s contest\u2014which involved more than 20,000 government positions\u2014and outcome were unprecedented, some questioned whether the results would be truly transformative for Mexico, where <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mexico-poverty-rate-declines-9fedcf8f40f62971beff2f9ffa47f190\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poverty and inequality remain high<\/a> despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberglinea.com\/english\/minimum-wage-in-mexico-set-to-rise-by-20-next-year-amlo-confirms\/\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minimum wage hikes<\/a> and other progress made in recent years under the government of L\u00f3pez Obrador, commonly known as AMLO.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;AMLO has done a little better for people than prior governments, and Sheinbaum has pledged to continue his political approach, though with a greater emphasis on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elfinanciero.com.mx\/elecciones-mexico-2024\/2024\/04\/12\/quien-va-a-gobernar-soy-yo-como-diferenciara-sheinbaum-su-gobierno-con-el-de-amlo\/\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sustainability<\/a>,&#8221; Tamara Pearson, a Mexican Australian author, journalist, and activist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/world\/mexico-elections-sheinbaum-puebla\/\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> for <em>The Nation<\/em> ahead of Sunday&#8217;s race. &#8220;The pension for informal workers has increased to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.mx\/bienestar\/prensa\/2024-inicia-con-aumentos-a-pensiones-de-bienestar-anuncia-ariadna-montiel?idiom=es\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">6,000 pesos<\/a> ($359) every two months. The health system for informal workers, which includes most Mexicans, is still extremely lacking but has improved.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The outgoing president has also faced backlash for <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2024\/05\/whats-at-stake-for-the-environment-in-mexicos-upcoming-election\/\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pursuing fossil fuel infrastructure projects<\/a> that risk damaging Indigenous communities and the planet.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mongabay<\/em>&#8216;s Maxwell Radwin <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2024\/05\/whats-at-stake-for-the-environment-in-mexicos-upcoming-election\/\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noted<\/a> last week that Sheinbaum\u2014who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/site\/assets\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ipcc_wg3_ar5_annex-iv.pdf\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contributed to<\/a> a major Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report\u2014&#8221;continues to support one of AMLO&#8217;s most polarizing projects, the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2024\/04\/all-aboard-tren-maya-heres-what-we-found-riding-mexicos-controversial-railway\/\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tren Maya<\/a>, a 1,554-kilometer (966-mile) railroad crossing the Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite dozens of legal <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2022\/08\/mexico-court-drops-injunctions-paving-way-for-controversial-tren-maya-railway\/\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">complaints<\/a> about <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2023\/03\/mexicos-tren-maya-hotel-construction-clears-forest-reserve-without-permits\/\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deforestation<\/a>, the destruction of cave ecosystems, and the relocation of Indigenous communities,&#8221; Radwin observed, &#8220;she&#8217;s defended the project and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com.mx\/claudia-sheinbaum-promete-en-yucatan-ampliar-el-tren-maya-hasta-puerto-progreso\/\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">suggested<\/a> expanding it to a major port in the town of Progreso, in northwest Yucat\u00e1n.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With Mexico facing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/environment\/article\/2024\/05\/31\/mexico-hit-with-relentless-deadly-heatwave_6673356_114.html\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">devastating heatwave<\/a> and other <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/182099\/claudia-sheinbaum-mexico-president-climate-scientist\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">climate impacts<\/a>, Sheinbaum has pledged to prioritize clean energy development, vowing to &#8220;lead a $13.6 billion program to jumpstart Mexico&#8217;s renewable energy sector,&#8221; <em>Politico<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/power-switch\/2024\/05\/31\/a-green-turn-for-mexicos-presidency-00161099\" class=\"rm-stats-tracked\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sheinbaum is set to take office in October.<\/p>\n<p>_______________________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/jake-johnson-e1506789209504.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-99479\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/jake-johnson-e1506789209504.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em> Jake Johnson is a staff writer for<\/em> Common Dreams.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
