The social media around us, familiarises people with the nature and kinds of jobs that one sees and works in — in fact in all spheres of our lives.

To talk of food that we eat, we can produce and consume it at home; or what is now quite common, one can order what we want to eat by our computer and within a short period of time, we can get appetising and warm food — a pizza for example.

To talk of communication— we have the high speed Internet, we have the feature of whattsapp which is used by most people and even by youngsters. If we want to say something to our friends, colleagues or even unknown people, we have the facility of whattsapp that helps us communicate easily and with speed. Earlier there was the facility of speed post which is available even today but it is not used too often because of whattsapp and email.

Education is partly the same as earlier — we have avenues of studying undergraduate or postgraduate courses in science, mathematics or commerce or languages as earlier, although the curriculum is not too different from what it was earlier. However some latest developments have been added and are also being studied to give a robust account of new features both in the contents as also in the manner of teaching. Some courses such as those dealing with computers and AI(Artificial Intelligence) have also been introduced which students like to study and thereby imbibe the latest contents and techniques .

A related concept of robotics has also been introduced in some education courses — and it is expected that robots will do some types of duty in today’s environment. Sometimes robots are being made to do some simple jobs — even driving a train in place of men or humans.

Means of travel today are also varied and have different speeds — from using one’s vehicle — car or bike or a bicycle that can take a person from one place to another with different speeds and with safety considerations in view. Of course, we cannot travel to several distant places in a bicycle if we don’t have other faster means of travel. But a bicycle is a safe and inexpensive means of travel and there have been occasions when some people — mainly youngsters who have travelled really long distances — even two dozen kilometres or more, by this simple two wheeled contraption.

Travel by train is quite a familiar activity; sometimes the train goes at a very fast pace — in bullet trains for example. Travel by air is also quite common today. This is necessary since even travel in India along different routes some of which are long and difficult, is needed by individuals for personal as well as for official purposes.

Workwise there are several places one can work and do work. If a person is working in a bank or in an office, there are not too many differences to work from earlier type of working. But some new avenues have also come up. For example, one can work at home and after completing a section of work, one can transmit it and thus complete the work or assignment in phases.

Earlier, industry used to provide many types of jobs. These are rather rare now since industrial work is now fairly different from what it was a generation or two back. However industry does employ various persons for different purposes for which it has trained persons suitably.

We have briefly indicated different types of work and how they are carried out. For this purpose we have briefly talked of suitable training for different tasks. In addition we have referred to travel by train and air. All this requires proper understanding of changes that have become necessary and have to be adopted in various areas — education, travel, computing, robotics etc.

______________________________________________

Dr Ravi P Bhatia is a member of the TRANSCEND Network for Peace Development Environment, an educationist, Gandhian scholar and peace researcher.
