{"id":264054,"date":"2024-06-17T12:00:38","date_gmt":"2024-06-17T11:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=264054"},"modified":"2024-07-01T08:19:52","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T07:19:52","slug":"94-of-north-americans-want-to-end-ukraine-war-but-us-rejects-china-peace-deal-opposes-talks-with-russia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2024\/06\/94-of-north-americans-want-to-end-ukraine-war-but-us-rejects-china-peace-deal-opposes-talks-with-russia\/","title":{"rendered":"94% of North Americans Want to End Ukraine War but US Rejects China Peace Deal, Opposes Talks with Russia"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em>Polling shows 94% of people in the US and 88% in Western Europe want a negotiated settlement to end the war in Ukraine, but NATO opposes a peace proposal made by China and Brazil, and refuses to invite Russia to talks in Switzerland. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"94% of Americans want to end Ukraine war, but US rejects China peace deal, opposes talks with Russia\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l5eQd1E_Huo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>8 Jun 2024 <\/em>&#8211; The Institute for Global Affairs of Eurasia Group, an avowedly pro-NATO and anti-Russia consulting firm that has worked extensively with Western governments, published a study this June titled \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/instituteforglobalaffairs.org\/2024\/06\/modeling-democracy-the-new-atlanticism\/\" >The New Atlanticism<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The survey found that the 94% of people in the US and 88% in Western Europe want a negotiated settlement to end the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Just 17% of North Americans and Western Europeans say that the war must continue in order to weaken Russia.<\/p>\n<p>(The poll allowed participants to choose two answers, which explains why the total is larger than 100%).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12473\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/poll-ukraine-war-nato-negotiated-settlement-US-Europe.webp?resize=880%2C1446&amp;ssl=1\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/poll-ukraine-war-nato-negotiated-settlement-US-Europe.webp?w=1204&amp;ssl=1 1204w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/poll-ukraine-war-nato-negotiated-settlement-US-Europe.webp?resize=183%2C300&amp;ssl=1 183w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/poll-ukraine-war-nato-negotiated-settlement-US-Europe.webp?resize=623%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 623w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/poll-ukraine-war-nato-negotiated-settlement-US-Europe.webp?resize=768%2C1262&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/poll-ukraine-war-nato-negotiated-settlement-US-Europe.webp?resize=934%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 934w\" alt=\"poll ukraine war nato negotiated settlement US Europe\" width=\"880\" height=\"1446\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In May, China and Brazil introduced a joint <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.br\/planalto\/en\/latest-news\/2024\/05\/brazil-and-china-present-joint-proposal-for-peace-negotiations-with-the-participation-of-russia-and-ukraine\" >proposal for peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In their six-point plan, Beijing and Brasilia called for \u201can international peace conference held at a proper time that is recognized by both Russia and Ukraine, with equal participation of all parties as well as fair discussion of all peace plans\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This contrasted with a so-called \u201cpeace conference\u201d that the Western powers are holding in Switzerland from June 15-16. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us-encourages-china-attend-peace-summit-ukraine-2024-06-06\/\" >Russia was not invited<\/a> to this NATO-backed \u201cpeace summit\u201d, meaning there will not be any actual negotiations between the warring parties to try to end the war.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese government said it will not participate in the one-sided Switzerland conference, stating that it would only join if Russia was invited as well.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mfa.gov.cn\/eng\/zxxx_662805\/202302\/t20230224_11030713.html\" >Beijing has made numerous peace proposals<\/a> to try to end the war in Ukraine. These have been consistently opposed by the US and its NATO allies.<\/p>\n<p>This comes at a very dangerous moment, when the US government is considering <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/biden-aide-raises-possible-increased-deployments-us-strategic-nuclear-weapons-2024-06-07\/\" >deploying more strategic nuclear weapons<\/a>, aimed at China and Russia, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p>Politico revealed in May that the Joe Biden administration had authorized Ukraine to use US weapons to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/05\/30\/biden-ukraine-weapons-strike-russia-00160731\" >launch attacks inside Russian territory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>French President Emmanuel Macron announced this June that Paris and Western allies had made an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2024\/06\/07\/france-ukraine-military-trainers\/\" >agreement to send military trainers to Ukraine<\/a>. The Washington Post noted that this \u201cis the latest sign that France and other allies may now be willing to put NATO country troops on Ukrainian soil\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The US and its European allies have already had special operations forces and spies on the ground in Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict. The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/25\/us\/politics\/commandos-russia-ukraine.html\" >New York Times admitted this<\/a> in June 2022. But the number of Western forces was quite small.
