{"id":26438,"date":"2013-03-11T12:00:47","date_gmt":"2013-03-11T12:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=26438"},"modified":"2013-05-30T13:15:55","modified_gmt":"2013-05-30T12:15:55","slug":"arab-league-offers-syria-seat-to-opposition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2013\/03\/arab-league-offers-syria-seat-to-opposition\/","title":{"rendered":"Arab League Offers Syria Seat to Opposition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Syrian National Coalition, the opposition umbrella group, asked to send representative to Doha summit later this month.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The Arab League has offered the Syrian National Coalition,\u00a0an opposition umbrella group backed by the\u00a0West and Arab states, Syria&#8217;s\u00a0seat at the league, and has decided to let its member nations arm the rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad.<\/p>\n<p>Nabil Elaraby, the regional body&#8217;s secretary-general,\u00a0said\u00a0on Wednesday [6 Mar 2013]\u00a0that ministers meeting in Cairo had invited the SNC to choose a representative to attend the league summit in the Qatari capital, Doha, on March 26 and 27.<\/p>\n<p>The umbrella group would retain Syria&#8217;s seat in the 22-member organisation &#8220;until elections leading to the formation of a government to assume the responsibilities of power in Syria,&#8221;\u00a0the Arab League\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>Iraq and Algeria expressed reservations, while Lebanon declined to be associated with the resolution,\u00a0Elaraby told the news conference.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0statement issued by the 22-member\u00a0bloc said that Arab states were free to offer military support to rebels fighting the forces of\u00a0 Assad if they wished.<\/p>\n<p>Qatar has blamed Assad for nearly two years of bloodshed in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The person who brought a sea of blood is Bashar because he did not commit to the Arab decisions and did not cooperate with us,&#8221; Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani, Qatar&#8217;s prime minister,\u00a0told the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Walid al-Bunni, a spokesman for the Syrian National Coalition, told Al Jazeera the decision was the &#8220;most important step taken&#8221; by the league since the conflict began.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re very happy to hear that. It&#8217;s late but it&#8217;s very good,&#8221; he said from the Hungarian capital, Budapest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope the international community too will take the same step.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera&#8217;s Rula Amin, reporting from neighbouring Lebanon, called it a &#8220;major milestone for the opposition&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s more delegitimisation for President Assad. Only yesterday US Secretary of State John Kerry said President Assad had lost all legitimacy and [that] there was no way for him to restore it.
