It\u2019s racist and it is carrying out genocidal politics,\u2019 Maguire tells Anadolu<\/li>\n<li>US, UK, Germany and other Western nations are \u2018funding genocide,\u2019 says Northern Irish peace activist<\/li>\n<li>\u2018If we keep the movement going, have everybody raising their voices with the Palestinians, then we can turn this around,\u2019 says Maguire<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>BELFAST, Northern Ireland <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Peace for Palestinians is possible, but only if the Israeli government gives up its \u201cgenocidal policies,\u201d according to Nobel Peace laureate Mairead Maguire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot build peace on a genocide, and that tragically is what\u2019s happening to the Palestinian people,\u201d Maguire, co-recipient of the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize, said in an exclusive interview with Anadolu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Israeli government is an apartheid government. It\u2019s racist, and it is carrying out genocidal politics. It\u2019s determined to take over the Palestinians\u2019 land.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udde3 \u2018You cannot build peace on a genocide\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Maguire speaks to Anadolu about Israel\u2019s \u2018genocidal politics,\u2019 condemning its \u2018barbaric\u2019 war on Gaza and calling out the US and Western nations for their complicity \u2935\ufe0f <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/X8TAOUWywE\" >https:\/\/t.co\/X8TAOUWywE<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TGRd6hcFuS\" >pic.twitter.com\/TGRd6hcFuS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Anadolu English (@anadoluagency) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/anadoluagency\/status\/1806264588951818388?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >June 27, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Maguire became a leading peace activist in Northern Ireland after the death of her three young children of her sister during the Troubles, an era during which more than 3,500 people were killed in sectarian violence.<\/p>\n<p>In 1976, she co-founded Peace People along with fellow Nobel laureate Betty Williams and Ciaran McKeown, a grassroots movement for peace in Northern Ireland, and has since been a strong voice for justice in other conflict areas around the world, including Palestine.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli authorities deported her on three different occasions as she tried to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been many times to Palestine and I\u2019ve been shocked by the tremendous suffering the Palestinian people are putting up with at the hands of the Israelis,\u201d said Maguire, wearing a jacket with traditional Palestinian embroidery presented to her by late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.<\/p>\n<p>She said Israel\u2019s ongoing assault on Gaza, where it has now killed more than 37,700 Palestinians and injured nearly 86,500 others, most of them women and children, is a \u201cgenocide of the Palestinian people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This \u201cbarbaric, inhumane, cruel war against men, women and children in Palestine\u201d must come to an end, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop this madness \u2026 History will recall that thousands and thousands of Palestinian people died needlessly because a government was too arrogant to sit down and reach an agreement and solve the problem,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThousands of Palestinian children are dying and the world is watching. It\u2019s got to stop now. It has gone on too long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>West is \u2018funding genocide\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like many other leading minds of today, Maguire is also clear on US and Western complicity in Israel\u2019s deadly actions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica has let the world down. It\u2019s funding genocide. It is providing arms for a genocide \u2026 America is complicit in what is going on,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She emphasized that President Joe Biden \u201ccould stop this war in the morning\u201d if he refuses to give Israel bombs and money, but the US will not do that \u201cfor its own political purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey won\u2019t do it because in America they depend on Israeli support \u2026 (even for) being elected in the Congress. They take money from arms people (manufacturers). They take money from Israeli elite and they let children die of starvation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maguire also called out the UK for \u201csending money to Israel and trying to silence the voices \u2026 for human rights and international law for the people of Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those who are \u201cspeaking out on behalf of the little children of Gaza \u2026 are being (told) they are antisemite,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t have a world that\u2019s made up of superpowers killing those who are innocent. We\u2019re not being antisemitic. When you call for justice, for truth, you are being human because you are calling for humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Germany, Maguire said the country and its people \u201cknow the cost of genocides\u201d but are still \u201ccovering for those who are committing genocide, covering for an army which is criminal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are criminals. They are bombing from the sky with \u2026 bombs provided by America, Germany, England, Europe,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are criminals and they must be held accountable \u2026 We must hold accountable those who are carrying out these crimes. I applaud the International Court of Justice for naming those who are committing genocide, and I applaud the International Criminal Court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u2018We can turn this around\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reiterating Palestinians\u2019 right to peace and security, Maguire called for collective global action to bring an end to Israel\u2019s devastating offensive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t need to have a law degree to say this is genocide,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s raise our voices and let\u2019s not be silent. Let\u2019s demand an immediate cease-fire by Israel. Let\u2019s demand dialogue \u2026 Let\u2019s demand that we feed the children, open the crossings \u2026 Every voice should be raised in every protest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The peace activist also called for support to the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which is challenging Israel through a combination of economic pressure, global isolation and various other tactics.<\/p>\n<p>She stressed the need to ensure that Israel and its leaders are held accountable \u201cfor breaking the laws of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are ways that we can join together in the United Nations. Every country should come out and say, \u2018We want justice for the Palestinian people. We will not be silenced. We are not afraid and we\u2019re not antisemitic.
