One victim is understood to have been a doctor. At least 16 people were wounded, including seven children, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am feeling so down,\u201d Oleksandra said, pointing at the hospital, which was still surrounded by a cloud of dust as bulldozers removed the debris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey saved my son there two years ago, and now I see this,\u201d she said as dozens of volunteers rushed around, handing out bottled water, food and fruit to the children from pick-up trucks and buses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are children, just little ones. We see them every day. Some have cancer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital attack was part of a Russian barrage.<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-c5R8P\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/c5R8P\/1\/\" height=\"543\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"Locator map\" data-external=\"1\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Moscow launched three dozen missiles on several Ukrainian cities. At the time of writing, at least 36 people were reported to have been killed and 125 wounded, but the toll is expected to rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are still some children trapped under the debris,\u201d a rescue worker told Al Jazeera four hours after the strike.<\/p>\n<p>But a police officer signalled him to stop talking and told this reporter: \u201cEveryone is alive and well. Please stay away.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"russia-denies-responsibility\">Russia denies responsibility<\/h2>\n<p>Russia habitually denies targeting civilian infrastructure. It claimed the hospital was hit by a Ukrainian air defence missile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe statements by the regime in Kyiv about Russia\u2019s allegedly deliberate missile strike on civilian sites are absolutely unreal,\u201d the Russian Ministry of Defence said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMultiple photos and video footage from Kyiv undoubtedly confirm the fact of destruction due to the fall of a Ukrainian air defence missile launched within the city limits,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>But military analysts are adamant that the attack on Okhmatdyt was deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>They used the \u201cwhole spectre\u201d of missiles backed by Iranian-made Shaheed drones and \u201cstruck during daytime to exert moral and psychological pressure\u201d, said Lieutenant General Ihor Romanenko, former deputy head of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey struck Okhmatdyt to hit a nerve, so that Ukrainians, Kyivans get emotional and pressure their\u201d leaders to agree with a Kremlin-proposed plan\u00a0that would force Ukraine to recognise Moscow-occupied parts of Ukraine and Crimea as parts of Russia, he told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3022429\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3022429\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-3022429\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/INTERACTIVE-WHO-CONTROLS-WHAT-IN-UKRAINE-1720013136.png?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C770&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"INTERACTIVE-WHO CONTROLS WHAT IN UKRAINE-1720013136\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3022429\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Al Jazeera)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ukrainians who have lived through years of bombardment agree that the assault was no mistake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose were hits, not midair collisions\u201d with air defence missiles, said Serhiy, a construction engineer who witnessed hits on the Artyom military plant, which is about a kilometre (0.6 miles) away from the Okhmatdyt hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe intervals between them were equal \u2013 one, two, three, four. I have seen and heard enough of them,\u201d Serhiy told Al Jazeera. He is a native of the eastern Russian-occupied city of Donetsk, which was taken over by Russia-backed separatists in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Like many Ukrainians, he is used to the strikes and the war in general.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no feelings left,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He was not able to attend his mother\u2019s funeral in Donetsk last year because a trip to the city would have become a \u201cone-way ticket\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Artyom plant once produced missiles and other weaponry for Ukraine\u2019s air forces.<\/p>\n<p>It has been hit multiple times since the full-scale Russian invasion began in 2022, even though most of its manufacturing has been relocated and only a handful of staffers worked in the building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have run,\u201d one of them told Al Jazeera on condition of anonymity, sitting in the shadow of an Orthodox Christian chapel across the street from the plant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything was flying around \u2013 sketches, papers, things,\u201d he said, pointing at the building where firefighters were putting out a fire that was sending up two huge plumes of black smoke which were seen all over Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p>He said at least one of his colleagues was killed.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"russia-s-missiles-harder-to-identify-and-destroy\">Russia\u2019s missiles \u2018harder to identify and destroy\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Minutes later, a second air raid alert sent rescue workers, police officers and civilians to an underground passage.<\/p>\n<p>Even though advanced Western air defence systems protect Kyiv from most of the Russian missiles and drones, Moscow keeps \u201cimproving\u201d its bombardment tactics, Ukraine\u2019s Air Force spokesman said.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s missiles are \u201charder to identify and destroy\u201d, Yurii Ihnat wrote on Facebook.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3033242\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3033242\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-3033242\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/2024-07-08T092218Z_1232963728_RC2XQ8A5Z7SS_RTRMADP_3_UKRAINE-CRISIS-ATTACK-KYIV-1720431788.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C513&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Rescuers work at Ohmatdyt Children's Hospital that was damaged during a Russian missile strikes, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Kyiv, Ukraine July 8, 2024.
