(Photo credit: Firas Al-Shaer)<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p>The Washington Post <em>interviewed Palestinian prisoners and accessed details of autopsies to document three deaths in Israel&#8217;s Megiddo Prison.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>29 Jul 2024 <\/em>&#8211; A new report from <i>The Washington Post<\/i> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2024\/07\/29\/palestinian-prisoners-israel-jails-abuse\/\" >published<\/a> today details Israel\u2019s torture, starvation, and killing of Palestinians in its prison system in a manner resembling the notorious US prison in Guantanamo Bay.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>Based on eyewitness accounts from former prisoners and autopsies carried out by Israeli authorities, <i>The Post<\/i> reports that \u201cOne Palestinian inmate died with a ruptured spleen and broken ribs after being beaten by Israeli prison guards. Another met an excruciating end because a chronic condition went untreated. A third screamed for help for hours<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>before dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The three prisoners are among at least 12 Palestinians from the West Bank and Israel to die in Israeli jails since 7 October, according to Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI), whose members sat in on the autopsies.<\/p>\n<p>An unknown number of Palestinians abducted by the Israeli military from the Gaza Strip have also died in detention camps outside of Israel\u2019s formal prison system.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Six Palestinians from Gaza, two of them women, were released from Ofer Prison in the occupied West Bank on 25 July, in horrific condition.<\/p>\n<p>They reported severe torture and displayed signs of brutal beatings during their detention.<\/p>\n<p>Hamas said that these inhumane conditions are\u2026 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wyuDyV4k5W\" >pic.twitter.com\/wyuDyV4k5W<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; The Cradle (@TheCradleMedia) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheCradleMedia\/status\/1816830666463486034?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >July 26, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Previous reports published by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/10\/middleeast\/israel-sde-teiman-detention-whistleblowers-intl-cmd\/index.html\" >CNN<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/06\/world\/middleeast\/israel-gaza-detention-base.html\" ><i>The New York Times <\/i><\/a>have documented the torture and rape of Palestinian detainees from Gaza at the notorious Sde Teiman camp in the Negev Desert.<\/p>\n<p>However, similar conditions exist in Israel\u2019s formal penal system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cViolence is pervasive,\u201d Jessica Montell, executive director of the Israeli rights group HaMoked, told <i>The Post<\/i>. \u201cIt\u2019s very overcrowded. Every prisoner that we\u2019ve met with has lost 30 pounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel\u2019s far-right national security minister who oversees the prison system, has been unapologetic about his \u201cwar\u201d on Palestinian detainees and advocates executing prisoners to alleviate overcrowding.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Post<\/i> documented the death of Abdulrahman Bahash, 23, who died at Megiddo Prison.<\/p>\n<p>Bahash, a member of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a Palestinian resistance group, was arrested in connection with armed clashes with Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank city of Nablus.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s prison service said it could not detail what if any, charges were brought against Bahash.<\/p>\n<p>Two of Bahash\u2019s fellow inmates at Megiddo Prison said he died after guards severely beat him in December.<\/p>\n<p>Guards went at Bahash and several other prisoners \u201cin a crazy way,\u201d one prisoner told <i>The Post<\/i>. \u201cThey used their batons, they kicked us \u2026 all over our bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the beating, he said, Bahash and others were taken to an area of isolation cells.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe noise of the screams was all over the section,\u201d the prisoner said.<\/p>\n<p>Bahash died about three weeks later, on 1 January.<\/p>\n<p>The autopsy \u201crevealed signs of traumatic injury to the right chest and left abdomen, causing multiple rib fractures and spleen injury, potentially the result of assault,\u201d read a report from Daniel Solomon, a doctor with PHRI.<\/p>\n<p>Septic shock and respiratory failure following the beating were listed as potential causes of death. The Israeli Prison Service has not provided the official autopsy results to Bahash\u2019s family, nor have they returned his body.<\/p>\n<p>The prison service did not respond to questions about why his body had not been returned to his relatives.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Post<\/i> also documented the case of Abdul Rahman al-Maari, 33, who died in Megiddo Prison on 13 November.<\/p>\n<p>The father of four, Maari, had been in prison since February 2023, after he was detained at a temporary Israeli army checkpoint and accused of being affiliated with Hamas and possessing a firearm.<\/p>\n<p>A PHRI report based on the autopsy stated that \u201cBruises were seen over the left chest, with broken ribs and chest bone underneath \u2026 External bruises were also seen on the back, buttocks, left arm and thigh, and right side of the head and neck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A fellow prisoner, Khairy Hamad, told <i>The Post <\/i>that prison guards kicked Maari down a flight of about 15 metal stairs while handcuffed.<\/p>\n<p>Maari remained conscious, but was bleeding from the head. Guards then put him in an isolation cell. Fellow prisoner, 53-year-old lawyer Sariy Khourieh, listened to him wail in pain for hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was screaming all day and night,\u201d Khourieh said. \u201cI need a doctor,\u201d he remembers Maari repeatedly shouting before falling silent.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Post<\/i> also documented the case of 21-year-old, Muhammed al-Sabbar who died after prison authorities denied him medical treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli police detained Sabba for a social media post that allegedly constituted \u201cincitement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He has suffered since childhood from Hirschsprung\u2019s disease, which causes painful blockages to the bowels and requires a special diet and medication. Sabbar\u2019s stomach began to swell in October after he was denied his medication and he died on 28 February.<\/p>\n<p>By the time he was rushed to an emergency room, \u201chis condition was already such that the chance of saving him was slim,\u201d a PHRI report concluded.<\/p>\n<p>A policy of slow starvation accompanied the torture and medical neglect. Former prisoners told <i>The Post<\/i> that they had lost significant weight in jail, often between 30 and 50 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>The food given to prisoners is \u201cbarely enough to survive,\u201d said lawyer Aya al-Haj Odeh. Some of his clients said they received as little as three slices of bread a day or a few spoonfuls of rice and were given little water to drink.<\/p>\n<p>The Association for Civil Rights in Israel petitioned the Supreme Court in April over what it called a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/o\/Tsl8i\/https:\/www.english.acri.org.il\/post\/end-the-policy-of-starving-security-prisoners\" >\u201cpolicy of starvation<\/a>&#8221; in Israeli prisons.<\/p>\n<p>Another detainee, 37-year-old weightlifter Moaziz Abayad, could barely walk after his release.
