Many have been held captive for weeks on end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The medic from Al Nao hospital in Omdurman also spoke \u201cof the distressing number of babies born \u2013 born after rape &#8211; who are being abandoned now\u201d, the UNICEF spokesperson continued, during an update to journalists in Geneva via videolink from the wartorn country.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Countless horrors<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>He maintained that <strong>\u201ccountless atrocities\u201d upon children had gone unreported<\/strong>, often as a result of very limited access.<\/p>\n<p>He also warned that without action, tens of thousands of Sudanese children may die over the coming months, \u201cand that is by no means a worst-case scenario\u2026if there is a measles outbreak, if there is diarrhoea, or if there are respiratory infections, then the terrifying outlook for children in Sudan dramatically worsens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the <strong>current living conditions, with the heavy rains and the flooding, these diseases will spread like wildfire<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Echoing that grim update, the UN migration agency, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iom.int\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IOM<\/a>, agreed that flooding had added to the daily challenges facing millions of people whose lives have been uprooted by a battle for control of the country by rival militaries beginning in April 2022, stemming from the overthrow of long-time President Omar al-Bashir in 2019.<\/p>\n<div class=\"context-un_news_large_credit type-soundcloud media media--type-soundcloud media--view-mode-un-news-large-credit\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-soundcloud field--type-string field--label-visually_hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__item\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"media:soundcloud:5680e9bc-9969-4dd9-a0c3-e7f98887544f\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/1893282993&amp;visual=&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=true&amp;show_artwork=true&amp;show_playcount=false&amp;show_comments=false&amp;show_user=false&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;download=false&amp;buying=false&amp;sharing=false&amp;show_teaser=false&amp;single_active=true&amp;color=%23ff5500\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>Famine fears realized<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At the start of the month, global food security experts at the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Famine Review Committee (FRC)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fiom.us19.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3D2dca09f67efb6fc090574a83f%26id%3Dc5f4b946c0%26e%3D70747c07d0&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cdaniel.johnson%40un.org%7C617c6533019e4c7e6bb608dcbac99673%7C0f9e35db544f4f60bdcc5ea416e6dc70%7C0%7C0%7C638590622191017338%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=f2iPUo9slxN%2FbVvWrEiU35HSOP%2FYx%2BVBKlqT2rxbHB8%3D&amp;reserved=0\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> famine conditions in parts of North Darfur including Zamzam camp near Al Fasher town.<\/p>\n<p>The camp is home to half a million displaced people confronted by extreme food scarcity, which has fuelled malnutrition and death. An additional 13 areas are on the brink of famine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>The scale of devastation brought by the escalating violence in El Fasher town is profound and harrowing<\/strong>,\u201d the IPC report\u2019s authors noted, amid \u201cpersistent, intense and widespread clashes [that] have forced many residents to seek refuge in IDP camps, where they face a stark reality: basic services are scant or absent, compounding the hardship of displacement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to IOM, almost all internally displaced persons across Sudan &#8211; 97 per cent &#8211; are in localities with acute levels of food insecurity or worse.<\/p>\n<div class=\"context-un_news_full_width_credit_caption type-entermedia_image media media--type-entermedia-image media--view-mode-un-news-full-width-credit-caption\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-thumbnail field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Flooding in Sudan has displaced 20,000 people since June.\" src=\"https:\/\/global.unitednations.entermediadb.net\/assets\/mediadb\/services\/module\/asset\/downloads\/preset\/Collections\/Embargoed\/12-08-2024-IOM-Sudan.jpg\/image1170x530cropped.jpg\" alt=\"Flooding in Sudan has displaced 20,000 people since June.\" width=\"1170\" height=\"530\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-authors field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item\">\u00a9 IOM\/Lisa George<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-title field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item\">Flooding in Sudan has displaced 20,000 people since June.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>Staggering displacement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Worryingly, latest data from the UN agency shows that displacement continues to soar, with more than 10.7 million people seeking safety within the country and many displaced twice or more. Fighting in Sennar state alone displaced over 700,000 people last month with 63 per cent of this number originally displaced from other states, the majority from Khartoum.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking from Port Sudan via video to journalists in Geneva, IOM\u2019s Chief of Mission in the country, Mohamed Refaat, said that more the one in three of Sudan\u2019s internally displaced have come from Khartoum. \u201c<strong>That&#8217;s almost the whole capital of the country has been displaced<\/strong>, so imagine the scale of displacement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Citing ongoing aid access obstacles which have prevented UN humanitarians and partners from reaching some of the most vulnerable civilians in Sudan, the IOM officer said that a large number of civilians remain \u201ctrapped\u201d in a \u201cvery hostile war environment\u201d and with no access to health care services.
