Dubbed \u201cOperation Summer Camps,\u201d the Israeli army has deployed three separate brigades to invade the northern West Bank cities of Jenin, Tulkarem, and Tubas, respectively. The primary targets of the attack are the armed resistance groups that have grown and developed in the north over the past three years, including the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mondoweiss.net\/2023\/12\/little-gaza-in-jenin-refugee-camp-the-resistance-fights-for-survival\/\" >Jenin Brigade<\/a>, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mondoweiss.net\/2024\/01\/the-tulkarem-brigades-men-in-the-sun-resist-in-search-of-freedom\/\" >Tulkarem Brigade<\/a>, and the Tubas Brigade. The Israeli army radio reported on August 28 that the operation in the northern West Bank is the largest of its kind since Operation Defensive Shield in 2002, and is expected to last for several days.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mondoweiss<\/em> contributor and on-the-ground reporter <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mondoweiss.net\/2024\/08\/israel-launches-large-scale-military-invasion-in-the-northern-west-bank\/\" >Shatha Hanaysha has reported<\/a> that the invasion of large swathes of these cities has concentrated in the refugee camps, involving the use of reconnaissance planes and helicopters, the entry of armored vehicles and D9 bulldozers into neighborhoods (causing widespread destruction to civilian infrastructure), the killing of at least 10 people during the first day of the invasion (mostly through drone strikes), and the injury of dozens more from gunfire.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-mondoweiss wp-block-embed-mondoweiss\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content entered lazyloaded\" title=\"\u201cIsrael launches large-scale military invasion in the northern West Bank\u201d \u2014 Mondoweiss\" src=\"https:\/\/mondoweiss.net\/2024\/08\/israel-launches-large-scale-military-invasion-in-the-northern-west-bank\/embed\/#?secret=N0xeVaTbpL#?secret=QWugNxOk7S\" width=\"600\" height=\"485\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" data-secret=\"QWugNxOk7S\" data-rocket-lazyload=\"fitvidscompatible\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/mondoweiss.net\/2024\/08\/israel-launches-large-scale-military-invasion-in-the-northern-west-bank\/embed\/#?secret=N0xeVaTbpL#?secret=QWugNxOk7S\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Israeli forces have imposed a blockade on the cities of Jenin, Tubas, and Tulkarem, closing streets and roads leading in and out of the cities. Israeli forces surrounded and besieged the main hospitals in Jenin and Tulkarem, preventing ambulance crews from reaching or leaving the hospitals and conducting detailed searches of medical personnel and patients.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the Israeli army\u2019s operations have taken place in Nur Shams refugee camp in Tulkarem, Jenin refugee camp in Jenin, and al-Far\u2019a refugee camp in Tubas, causing damage and destruction to civilian infrastructure and launching several airstrikes.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/aje.io\/5qxr1z?update=3147631\" >Al Jazeera<\/a>, Israeli snipers stationed on rooftops in Jenin have been \u201cshooting anyone who is moving,\u201d which is how two people have been killed in Jenin. Al Jazeera also reported that the Israeli army continues to besiege Jenin Governmental Hospital and hampers the ability of ambulances to transport the wounded to the facility.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, Israel Katz, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Israel_katz\/status\/1828654399360586025\" >said on X<\/a> that the operation must deal with the armed groups \u201cjust as we deal with the terrorist infrastructure in Gaza, including the temporary evacuation of Palestinian residents,\u201d adding that the Israeli assault is a \u201cwar in every sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UN Foreign Policy chief Joseph Borrel <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JosepBorrellF\/status\/1828837521989697835\" >took to X<\/a> on Wednesday and warned against the West Bank operation from becoming \u201cthe premises of a war extension from Gaza,\u201d asserting that Israel Katz\u2019s statement threatened to \u201cfuel further instability.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JosepBorrellF\/status\/1828837521989697835\" >https:\/\/x.com\/JosepBorrellF\/status\/1828837521989697835<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mondoweiss.net\/2024\/08\/operation-al-aqsa-flood-day-328-israeli-foreign-minister-calls-west-bank-invasion-a-war-in-every-sense\/\" >TO CONTINUE\u00a0 READING Go to Original &#8211; mondoweiss.net<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>29 Aug 2024 &#8211; The Israeli army\u2019s large-scale assault on the northern West Bank has entered its second day.
