CWII fervor is reaching fever pitch in Washington.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>22 Sep 2024 <\/em>&#8211; The US House of Representatives approved 25 anti-China laws in just one week in September: a clear sign that Washington\u2019s new cold war is quickly heating up.<\/p>\n<p>The hawkish House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party proudly <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/selectcommitteeontheccp.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/china-week-recap-congress-passes-25-bills-combat-chinese-communist-party\" >described these days as \u201cChina Week\u201d<\/a>, boasting that much of the legislation had \u201coverwhelming bipartisan\u201d support.<\/p>\n<p>NBC News noted that \u201cmany of the measures passed with bipartisan support at a time when viewing [China] primarily as a geopolitical rival is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/congress-china-week-biotech-evs-drones-rcna170554\" >one of the few issues both Republicans and Democrats can agree on<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"US escalates new cold war on China: Congress passes 25 anti-Chinese laws in 1 week, funds propaganda\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Tix5L5qDaNw?feature=oembed\" width=\"880\" height=\"495\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Cold War Two fervor is reaching fever pitch in the United States. CIA Director William Burns has referred to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/2024\/02\/07\/cia-director-china-threat-russia-ukraine-war\/\" >China as the \u201cbigge[st] long-term threat\u201d<\/a>. The last two US secretaries of state, Democrat <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/the-administrations-approach-to-the-peoples-republic-of-china\/\" >Antony Blinken<\/a> and Republican <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mn.usembassy.gov\/speech-secretary-pompeo-07-23-2020\/\" >Mike Pompeo<\/a>, gave <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/2022\/05\/28\/cold-war-blinken-china-containment\/\" >speeches specifically dedicated to demonizing China<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In an article in the Financial Times in 2023, centrist British columnist Gideon Rachman recalled that, \u201cVisiting Washington last week, it was striking how <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/44fb5a00-e7b8-48bf-be20-5f72b2d4a048\" >commonplace talk of war between the US and China<\/a> has become\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany influential people seem to think that a US-China war is not only possible but probable\u201d, Rachman wrote, adding that \u201cUS officials are now looking at the cold war \u2014 not as a warning, but as a potential model\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/committeeonccp\/status\/1834565382746603883\" >https:\/\/x.com\/committeeonccp\/status\/1834565382746603883<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Among the bills passed during September 2024\u2019s \u201cChina Week\u201d was the \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/1157\" >Countering the PRC Malign Influence Fund Authorization Act<\/a>\u201d, which would give $1.63 billion to the State Department and USAID over five years ($325 million each year from 2023 through 2027) in order to fund organizations that spread anti-China propaganda around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Anti-interventionist think tank the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft noted that this massive funding for anti-China propaganda would amount to roughly <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/responsiblestatecraft.org\/china-cold-war-2669160202\/\" >twice the annual operating expenses of CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other bills approved in \u201cChina Week\u201d include legislation that threatens the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/1103\" >Hong Kong<\/a> Economic and Trade Office, targets <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/554\/text\" >Chinese officials<\/a> and their family members over Taiwan, seeks to strengthen US influence in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/7159\" >Pacific region<\/a>, deepens ties to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-resolution\/1056\" >Japan and South Korea<\/a>, expands <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/7151\" >blacklists<\/a> of Chinese companies, and hopes to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/510\" >weaken the renminbi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the bills would <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/5613\" >facilitate<\/a> the imposition of further <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/8361\" >unilateral US sanctions<\/a> on entities not only from China, but also from Russia, Iran, the DPRK (North Korea), Cuba, and Venezuela. (The United States has already imposed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/geopoliticaleconomy.com\/2024\/08\/28\/economic-world-war-us-sanctions-countries\/\" >sanctions on one-third of all countries on Earth<\/a>, including 60% of poor nations.)<\/p>\n<p>The so-called \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/7980\/text\" >End Chinese Dominance of Electric Vehicles in America Act<\/a>\u201d portrays Chinese EVs as a supposed threat, and would restrict them. However, it fails to mention that, as the New York Times put it, \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/15\/business\/economy\/china-electric-vehicles-biden-tariffs.html\" >few Chinese electric cars are sold in U.S.<\/a>\u201d An April 2024 report by the US International Trade Commission found that Chinese vehicles made up a mere <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usitc.gov\/publications\/332\/executive_briefings\/ebot_china_ev_exports.pdf\" >2% of EV imports into the US<\/a> from 2018 to 2023. Despite this, just a month later, President Joe Biden announced <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2024\/05\/14\/fact-sheet-president-biden-takes-action-to-protect-american-workers-and-businesses-from-chinas-unfair-trade-practices\/\" >100% tariffs on Chinese EVs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other bills passed during \u201cChina Week\u201d target Chinese <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/2864\" >drones<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/8631\" >batteries<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/8333\" >biotechnology<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/7589\" >routers and modems<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/4741\" >telecommunications infrastructure<\/a>, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/820\" >media outlets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Approved legislation would also block <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/5245\" >scientific cooperation<\/a> with China, while banning the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/9456\" >sale of US farmland<\/a> to nationals of China, Russia, Iran, and the DPRK (North Korea).<\/p>\n<p>An especially redundant bill adopted by the House would withhold funding to US universities that host <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/1516\" >Confucius Institutes<\/a> \u2013 organizations that teach foreign students about Chinese languages and culture.
