Israeli PM\u2019s remarks claim army has \u2018taken out\u2019 slain Hezbollah chief Nasrallah\u2019s successors, as group strikes Haifa.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

8 Oct 2024 <\/em>– Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Lebanon could face destruction \u201clike Gaza\u201d and claimed Israel has killed slain Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah\u2019s \u201creplacement, and the replacement of his replacement\u201d.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu\u2019s remarks came in a video message addressed to Lebanese citizens today, in which he also claimed Hezbollah is \u201cweaker than it has been for many, many years\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Israeli army previously said it had targeted top Hezbollah commander Hashem Safieddine, who was tipped to be the successor to Nasrallah, in an air strike on Beirut last week, but his fate is so far unknown.<\/p>\n

There has been no comment from the Lebanese armed group yet on Netanyahu\u2019s latest remarks.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have an opportunity to save Lebanon before it falls into the abyss of a long war that will lead to destruction and suffering like we see in Gaza,\u201d<\/em> Netanyahu said in his address, referring to the besieged enclave that has been under a relentless and bloody Israeli bombardment campaign for one year.<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s continuing assault on Gaza has devastated the territory and killed at least 41,965 people, according to Palestinian health authorities, and nearly all of Gaza\u2019s 2.3 million residents have been displaced at least once.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu\u2019s stark warning came as the Israeli military deployed more troops to Lebanon and ordered people in southern coastal areas, and in areas of the capital Beirut\u2019s southern suburbs, to evacuate.<\/p>\n

Hezbollah earlier said it fired rockets at the Israeli port city of Haifa, its biggest-yet rocket barrage\u00a0at the area, after the Israeli military reported 85 projectiles crossing from Lebanon.<\/p>\n

Israel expanded its incursion in Lebanon nearly a year after it began exchanging fire with Hezbollah. The Lebanese group says its strikes are in support of Palestinians in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Israel has promised to secure its northern border with Lebanon to allow tens of thousands of Israelis to return to towns and settlements there.<\/p>\n

Hezbollah\u2019s Qassem \u2018calm\u2019 and \u2018in control\u2019<\/h2>\n

Both the Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza, and Lebanon\u2019s Hezbollah, have pledged no let-up against Israel, and on Tuesday Hezbollah deputy leader Naim Qassem said the group would make it impossible for Israelis to return to the north.<\/p>\n

Israel launched a wave of strikes against Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon on September 23, leaving at least 1,473 people dead since then.<\/p>\n

Israeli attacks have targeted southern and eastern Lebanon, as well as southern and central Beirut, forcing more than a million people to flee and placing a massive strain on the country\u2019s healthcare system.<\/p>\n

While Lebanon\u2019s coast has not been spared, Israel\u2019s latest evacuation warning suggests it is extending its offensive northwards.<\/p>\n

On its Telegram channel, the Israeli military said its 146th Division began \u201climited, localised, targeted operational activities\u201d against what it claimed are Hezbollah targets and infrastructure in southwestern Lebanon.<\/p>\n

Hezbollah\u2019s deputy leader said despite Israel\u2019s \u201cpainful\u201d strikes, the group\u2019s leadership structure was in order and its military capabilities were \u201cfine\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cNetanyahu says he wants to bring back\u201d the displaced to their homes in northern Israel, Qassem said.<\/p>\n

But \u201cwe say that many more residents will be forced to flee\u201d their homes, he warned.<\/p>\n

Military and security analyst Elijah Magnier said that Qassem has become \u201cthe spokesperson of Hezbollah\u201d, and appeared to be \u201cin control\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is his second appearance after the beginning of the war on Lebanon in the last few weeks. He is appearing more confident, he\u2019s more calm, he\u2019s in control,\u201d Magnier told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is not saying, \u2018I am the new secretary-general\u2019 because there is going to be an election [but] it\u2019s not going to happen soon because there is no need.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, if the Israelis have stopped the clock on their time, they\u2019re really going to be very disappointed because Hezbollah has absorbed this hit and is moving forward,\u201d Magnier said.<\/p>\n
