The newspapers keep saying the air in Gaza smells like corpses. Like rotting human flesh; the entire Gaza Strip. They say it emanates from the rubble. Pervades everything. <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The newspapers keep saying<\/a> the air in Gaza smells like corpses.
\nLike rotting human flesh; the entire Gaza Strip.
\nThey say it emanates from the rubble.
\nPervades everything.
\nIt\u2019s just what Gaza smells like,
\nlike how Hershey, Pennsylvania smells like chocolate,
\nor how Milpitas, California smells like landfill.<\/p>\n

I bet you can never get the smell out.
\nOut of your clothes.
\nOut of your hair.
\nOut of your dreams.
\nOut of your heart.<\/p>\n

I bet none of us can.<\/p>\n

Gaza smells like rotting corpses, and
\nour whole civilization smells like Gaza.
\nYou walk into a Starbucks and it hits you.
\nYou go watch Trump\u2019s inaugural address and there it is.
\nThe smell of rotting dead children wafts from our own ruins.
\nFills our minds.
\nFills our nightmares.
\nFills the speech of the yammering pundit.
\nFills the feigned joy of the social media influencer.
\nFills the light pouring from our screens onto our faces in the dark.<\/p>\n

We can scrub as hard as we like,
\nbut that smell\u2019s never coming out.<\/p>\n

It will follow us straight down to hell.<\/p>\n
