{"id":28134,"date":"2013-04-22T12:10:40","date_gmt":"2013-04-22T11:10:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=28134"},"modified":"2015-05-06T12:53:11","modified_gmt":"2015-05-06T11:53:11","slug":"nearly-half-guantanamo-now-on-hunger-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2013\/04\/nearly-half-guantanamo-now-on-hunger-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly Half Guantanamo Now On Hunger Strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><i>US official says 77 inmates now on hunger strike over jailing without charge or trial, nearly half of total population.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The number of detainees taking part in a hunger strike at the US-run Guantanamo Bay\u00a0military prison has grown to 77, an increase of 25 in just the past few days, according to a US military\u00a0spokesman.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Lieutenant Colonel Samuel House said in a statement that of the detainees refusing food, 17 are receiving &#8220;enteral feedings,&#8221;\u00a0a process\u00a0involving\u00a0being force-fed via tubes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Five of the inmates have been admitted to hospital, although none faces &#8220;life-threatening conditions,&#8221; House said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The facility, which houses 166 detainees, has been hit by hunger strikes since February 6, when inmates claimed prison officials searched their\u00a0Qurans for contraband. Officials have denied any mishandling of Islam&#8217;s holy book.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The hunger strikers are protesting against\u00a0their incarceration without charge or trial at Guantanamo\u00a0over the past 11 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;They say they want their freedom,&#8221; Al Jazeera&#8217;s Rosiland Jordan, reporting from Washington,\u00a0said. &#8220;Or they&#8217;ll die trying to get it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Lawyers representing inmates at the prison have said most of the estimated 130 detainees at Guantanamo&#8217;s Camp Six wing, which houses &#8220;low-value&#8221; prisoners, are on hunger strike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Torture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Al Jazeera journalist Sami al-Haj, who spent six years\u00a0at the\u00a0Guantanamo Bay prison, said: &#8220;They used dogs on us, they beat me, sometimes they hung me from the ceiling and didn&#8217;t allow me to sleep for six days.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Brandon Neely, a US Military Policeman and former Guantanamo guard, told Al Jazeera that detainees were &#8220;treated horribly&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Neely said he\u00a0regularly watched detainees being beaten and humiliated, as well as watching a medic beat an inmate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Bill O&#8217;Neil, an international lawyer, pointed out\u00a0that by its actions in Guantanamo, the US has violated the UN\u00a0Convention against Torture, which it has ratified and is thus legally bound to uphold.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;As such under international law binding on the US, those involved in planning, ordering and overseeing those acts in Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo and elsewhere that constituted torture [and those subordinate officers who were ordered to commit torture cannot use the defence of &#8220;following superior orders&#8221;] should be investigated and if the evidence so indicates, prosecuted,&#8221; O&#8217;Neil told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Despite an order in 2011\u00a0by Barack Obama, the US president, to close Guantanamo\u00a0down by the\u00a0end of that year, there are no current plans to\u00a0shut the prison.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/americas\/2013\/04\/201342172239565373.html\" >Go to Original \u2013 aljazeera.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US official says 77 inmates now on hunger strike over jailing without charge or trial, nearly half of total population.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[65,57,139,52],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-28134","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-anglo-america","category-militarism","category-justice","category-health"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/28134","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/4"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=28134"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/28134\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=28134"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=28134"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=28134"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
