Marsella, who retired in 2003, leaves behind a profound legacy of academic excellence, cultural understanding and educational leadership that spanned decades at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>A distinguished psychologist and transformative academic leader, Marsella began at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> as a postdoctoral fellow at the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eastwestcenter.org\/\" >East-West Center<\/a> before joining the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/psychology.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\" >psychology department<\/a> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. His leadership during that time was instrumental in commissioning the historic <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"KaU\">Ka\u02bb\u016b<\/span> report, which detailed the university\u2019s commitment to Native Hawaiians. Marsella further demonstrated his dedication by supporting the establishment of the Center for Hawaiian Studies at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, creating a crucial institutional space for Native Hawaiian academic research and cultural preservation. Throughout his career, he mentored nearly 100 doctoral students, leaving an indelible mark on generations of scholars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a professor and an administrator, our Dad never wanted students to feel like \u201cjust a number,\u201d at a large university,\u201d said Marsella\u2019s daughters Laura Contant and Gianna Marsella who is a managing editor at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Press. \u201cHe genuinely cared about their interests and goals, and was dedicated to helping them succeed. Marsella, Ph.D. (13 Dec 1947 &#8211; 2 Nov 2024), <\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-size: large;\">was a<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> member of the <\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/\" ><span style=\"font-size: large;\">TRANSCEND Network for Peace Development Environment<\/span><\/a><\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: large;\">, a past president of Psychologists for Social Responsibility, Emeritus Professor of psychology at the University of Hawaii\u2019s Manoa Campus in Honolulu-Hawaii, and past director of the World Health Organization Psychiatric Research Center in Honolulu. \u00a0He <\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-size: large;\">used to be<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> known internationally as a pioneer figure in the study of culture and psychopathology who challenged the ethnocentrism and racial biases of many assumptions, theories, and practices in psychology and psychiatry. In more recent years, he ha<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-size: large;\">d<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-size: large;\"> been writing and lecturing on peace and social justice. He published 21 books and more than 300 articles, tech reports, and popular commentaries.
