27 Jan 2025<\/em> – In his inaugural address on 20 January (we recommend to read the full transcript on the White House website), President Trump characterised his administration in a nutshell with the following words: <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAmericans conquered the Wild West, ended slavery, rescued millions from tyranny, lifted billions out of poverty, split the atom, launched mankind into the heavens.<\/strong> There is nothing we cannot do, no dream we cannot fulfil. Ambition is the lifeblood of a great nation, and right now our nation is more ambitious than any other. There is no nation like ours. America will reclaim its rightful place as the world\u2019s greatest, most powerful and most respected nation, inspiring awe and admiration from around the world. I will immediately begin the overhaul of our trade system to protect American workers and families. Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens. We will again build the strongest military the world has ever seen. We will measure our success not only by the battles we win, but also by the wars we conclude and, perhaps more importantly, the wars we never get into. I want to be a peacemaker and unifier.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Marco Rubio, the newly appointed Secretary of State, said that <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cthe U.S. will remain committed to key Allies such as Israel and Taiwan, taking a tough approach to Iran, pursuing a more aggressive strategy to counter China, but at the same time taking a more realistic approach to dealing with the war in Ukraine.\u201d<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This is confirmed by the fact that at the same time as Israeli settlers backed by the army attacked Palestinian residents of Jenin in the West Bank, President Trump <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201clifted US sanctions on Israeli settlers in the West Bank<\/i>\u201c. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

At the same time, the Trump Administration initiated contacts with Moscow with the aim, Rubio confirmed, of <\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201creaching a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine with the expectation that both sides will have to make concessions<\/i>\u201c. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Rubio expressed support for NATO, calling it a \u201cdefensive alliance<\/i>\u201c, but echoed Trump\u2019s call for \u201cEurope to take on more financial responsibility<\/i>\u201c.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first responses from the Allies were significant. French President Macron said that<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cthe war in Ukraine will not end tomorrow or the day after\u201d and \u201casked the armed forces to submit proposals on how to mobilise more young volunteers to support the armed forces in case of need\u201d. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

German Defence Minister Pistorius said that <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGermany could send troops to a future buffer zone between Ukraine and Russia and allocate 3 percent of GDP to defence spending\u201d.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
