{"id":289590,"date":"2025-03-10T12:00:02","date_gmt":"2025-03-10T12:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=289590"},"modified":"2025-03-10T01:35:00","modified_gmt":"2025-03-10T01:35:00","slug":"perfide-albion-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2025\/03\/perfide-albion-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Perfide Albion"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<div class=\"YpjmDb LLotyc\" data-lc=\"6\" data-lh=\"18\"><em><span class=\"QoPDcf CYJS5e\">&#8220;Perfidious Albion&#8221; is a pejorative phrase used within the context of international relations diplomacy to refer to acts of diplomatic slights, duplicity, treachery and hence infidelity by monarchs or governments of the United Kingdom in their pursuit of self-interest and the expansion of the British Empire. <\/span><\/em><span class=\"QoPDcf CYJS5e\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perfidious_Albion\" class=\"y171A xmq3o Q7PwXb a-no-hover-decoration\" tabindex=\"0\"  aria-hidden=\"false\"><span class=\"IQhcI CYJS5e\"><span class=\"iJ25xd AcUlBb oAwKgb q8U8x\">[Wikipedia]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div data-lc=\"6\" data-lh=\"18\">****************************<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As the Arab revolt broadens and deepens, the roles of a global and a regional empire, USA and Israel, will surface increasingly.\u00a0The focus here is on the United Kingdom, or England, or simply Albion, known for its perfidy&#8211;Lord Palmerston\u2019s famous <em>\u201cNo permanent friends, no permanent enemies; permanent interests.\u201d <\/em>John Bull = John Bully?<\/p>\n<p>That empire had model character, and Tony Blair did his best to revive Albion by serving an Eagle across the Atlantic:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>misled the Parliament to believe the war was legal;<\/li>\n<li>lied about WMD, weapons of mass destruction;<\/li>\n<li>pretended that secret intelligence could be trusted;<\/li>\n<li>exaggerated the threat from Iraq and Saddam Hussein:<\/li>\n<li>concealed his agreements with Bush to go to war;<\/li>\n<li>obstructed the work of the UN WMD inspectors;<\/li>\n<li>inconsiderate warfare against Iraq\u2019s civilian population;<\/li>\n<li>misled the people to believe the war increased the security.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>(Extracted from the Chilcot hearings, <em>Klassekampen<\/em> 22 Jan 2011).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A person like that\u2013with a US co-defendant or two\u2013belongs in the International Criminal Court, beyond its use for Yugoslavs and Africans.\u00a0 Instead, he operates from the top floor of the US colony in Jerusalem, to bribe West Bank Palestinians into lucrative private sector deals.<\/p>\n<p>In the UN Security Council, both USA and UK are protected by direct veto, and Israel for its brutal warfare against the Gaza population indirectly.\u00a0 The three together managed to kill the Gaza report by Justice Julius Goldstone (Naomi Klein, \u201cGoldstone\u2019s Legacy for Israel\u201d, <em>The Nation<\/em> 14-02-2011); a report that may serve as a model for US-UK atrocities.<\/p>\n<p>The arch-imperialist Sir Winston S Churchill\u2013what is good for the Empire is also good for me\u2013looms high.\u00a0 In 1953 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.\u00a0 The Nobel statutes states that literature should not only cover <em>belles-lettres<\/em>, \u201cbut also other writings that in form and content show literary value\u201d.\u00a0 The 1902 prize was given to Theodor Mommsen for <em>The History of Rome<\/em>, and in 1953 to Churchill for <em>The Island Race<\/em>\u2013an inspired macro-history of the island whose history he shaped, and wrote. As, indeed, World War II.<\/p>\n<p>The two presentation addresses, by C. D. Af Wirs\u00e9n and S. Siwerts are themselves small highly professional masterpieces.\u00a0 Of course, there are controversies\u2013like an omitted Henrik Ibsen\u2013but happily Alfred Nobel did not entrust the task of appraising literature to five amateurs from the Swedish parliament like he did for peace from the parliament of Norway, even a client of the only surviving global empire.<\/p>\n<p>Churchill concludes his <em>The Island Race<\/em> at the end of the 19th century,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cNearly a hundred years of peace and progress had carried Britain to the leadership of the world.\u00a0 She had striven repeatedly for the maintenance of peace. The future is unknowable, but the past should give us hope\u201d.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 1911 a parliamentary commission compared the economies of India and Britain, found them quite similar in early 19th century and vastly different a century later.\u00a0 Britain was far ahead, India behind with deepening gaps.\u00a0 What had benefited one had not benefited the other.\u00a0 But that mattered little to Churchill; his concern was to be #1, the rallying cry in the USA right now, competing with other countries disregarding exploitation within and between. Like Harvard professors Ferguson and Nye on the CNN GPS program 6 March 2011.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent book by Madhusree Mukherjee, <em>Churchill\u2019s Secret War: The British Empire and the Ravaging of India During World War II<\/em> (Basic Books, 2010) the author holds Churchill responsible for not authorizing food shipped from Australia to save the three million who perished in the 1943 Bengali famine.<\/p>\n<p>Churchill hated Gandhi, a \u201c<em>naked fakir<\/em>\u201d, a <em>\u201cthoroughly evil force, hostile to us in every regard\u201d<\/em> and hoped he would starve himself to death by fasting.\u00a0 About Hindus he had this to say: <em>\u201cthe beastliest people in the world next to the Germans\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Germans.\u00a0 The \u201csplendid decision\u201d by the newly appointed Prime Minister to bomb, killing civilians, in Westphalia in Germany, using the retribution against Coventry and London to stimulate the British will to fight.\u00a0 And the massive bombing of Germany, after his gas attack by air in Iraq, 1921, against rebels who threatened civilization. 600,000 killed in Germany; women, children, old.\u00a0\u00a0 Were British and German warfare different?\u00a0 Democracy differs from dictatorship and Churchill from Hitler, but warfare? Is democracy a license to kill for victory at any price (Churchill); <em>total war<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>To Churchill, Hitler was a monster filled with envy, shameful, a carrier of hatred; to Hitler, Churchill was insane, putting the world afire (Klaus Wiegrepe, \u201c<em>Sieg um jeden Preis<\/em>\u201d,<em> Der Spiegel<\/em>, 3 Mar 2010).\u00a0 A world war.\u00a0 And a personal duel.<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Air Force was superior, so was the Wehrmacht.
