But I believe we all share the recognition that\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/about\/policy\/justice-human-rights\" >protecting human and civil rights<\/a>\u00a0is essential \u2014 not only for the well-being of individuals and communities worldwide, but also for the survival of our democracy. This is why, as a profession, we must not be silent as we witness and experience the devastation that is unfolding in so many critical arenas where psychology-informed principles, research, and practice apply. Examples include all of the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*The heartless offensive against the right to healthcare, including\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealthfund.org\/publications\/issue-briefs\/2025\/mar\/how-cuts-medicaid-snap-could-trigger-job-loss-state-revenue\" >cuts<\/a>\u00a0to insurance coverage,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/03\/29\/nx-s1-5344462\/fda-vaccine-official-ousted\" >misinformation<\/a>\u00a0about vaccines, and the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/feb\/08\/trump-administration-medical-research-funding-cuts\" >defunding<\/a>\u00a0of medical research necessary to advance the treatment of life-altering and life-threatening illnesses<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/03\/us\/politics\/trump-diversity-racism.html\" >Racism-fueled<\/a>\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/03\/us\/politics\/public-school-funding-trump-dei.html\" >attacks<\/a>\u00a0on the principles and policies of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/ending-illegal-discrimination-and-restoring-merit-based-opportunity\/\" >diversity, equity, and inclusion<\/a>, subverting progress toward greater opportunity for marginalized and disadvantaged groups<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*The tyrannical\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/14\/us\/politics\/trump-pressure-universities.html\" >undermining<\/a>\u00a0of our\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/news\/racial-justice\/trumps-attack-on-the-department-of-education-explained\" >education system<\/a>\u00a0and of support for the free inquiry and independent scholarship that are foundational to our institutions of higher learning<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2025\/mar\/31\/trump-administration-student-protesters-immigration\" >Crackdowns<\/a>\u00a0against students and faculty who non-violently exercise their free speech rights in an effort to defend vulnerable communities around the world<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*The strangling of funding for\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/trump-proposes-massive-nih-budget-cut-and-reorganization\" >scientific research<\/a>, the gold standard for\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-01263-0\" >advancing knowledge<\/a>\u00a0as a means to alleviate suffering and improve the quality of life for millions<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*The unconscionable support for and participation in the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/W6qml\" >merciless<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/08\/world\/middleeast\/trump-netanyahu-israel-gaza.html\" >inhumane<\/a>\u00a0aggression against desperate civilian populations under siege<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*Implementation of a cruel and brutal program of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fcnl.org\/updates\/2025-02\/four-cruel-ways-trump-attacking-immigrants-and-our-values\" >mass deportations<\/a>, one that traumatizes immigrants and upends families and futures<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*The pursuit of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/resources\/explainer-trumps-executive-order-attacking-voting-rights\/\" >restrictions on voting rights<\/a>\u00a0that will deprive millions \u2014 especially women and people of color \u2014 of the opportunity to fully participate in elections that are central to the preservation of democracy itself<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*The\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/trumps-trans-attacks-vs-economy\/\" >assault<\/a>\u00a0on the LGBTQIA+ community, especially\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/news\/lgbtq-rights\/the-human-toll-of-trumps-anti-trans-crusade\" >transgender individuals<\/a>\u00a0by denying them appropriate medical treatment and the right to live their lives fully and authentically<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*Imposition of draconian restrictions on reproductive rights, including the further curtailing of access to\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/us\/abortion-laws-roe-v-wade.html\" >abortion<\/a>,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/01\/health\/usaid-contraception-cuts.html\" >contraception<\/a>, and relevant educational\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nwlc.org\/resource\/the-trump-administrations-first-actions-in-2025-targeting-patients-providers-and-reproductive-health-care-access\/\" >resources<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*The authoritarian discrediting of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/17\/politics\/trump-judges-conflict-boasberg-contempt\/index.html\" >judges<\/a>, intimidation of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/04\/13\/g-s1-59497\/trump-law-firms-pro-bono\" >law firms<\/a>, non-compliance with\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/15\/us\/politics\/trump-defy-courts.html\" >court orders<\/a>, and targeting of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/10\/us\/politics\/trump-officials-justice-department.html\" >political adversaries<\/a>, all undermining our legal system as a source of protection from government corruption and overreach<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*The autocratic\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/one-month-trump-press-freedom-under-siege\" >offensive<\/a>\u00a0against a free press and independent media that will deprive people of access to valuable reporting and analysis for better understanding the world<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*Oppressive attacks on the welfare of workers \u2014 including instituting\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/blog\/sweeping-federal-worker-layoffs-leave-states-reeling\" >mass layoffs<\/a>, denying them the benefits of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/apr\/07\/trump-union-workers-rights\" >unionization<\/a>, and subjecting them to\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-nlrb-national-labor-relations-board-gwynne-wilcox\/\" >unfair labor practices<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 that diminish their standard of living<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*The abandonment of science-based efforts to curb the destructive effects of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/09\/climate\/trump-threatens-climate-policies-in-the-states.html\" >climate change<\/a>, endangering future generations and today\u2019s most vulnerable communities<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*The disruption of trust and cooperation with international\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/31\/world\/trump-foreign-policy-trust.html\" >allies<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/02\/06\/politics\/donald-trump-executive-orders-icc-anti-christian-bias\/\" >institutions<\/a>, thereby threatening crucial treaties, diminishing access to\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfamamerica.org\/explore\/issues\/making-foreign-aid-work\/what-do-trumps-proposed-foreign-aid-cuts-mean\/\" >humanitarian aid<\/a>, and encouraging heightened militarism and\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/20\/us\/politics\/trump-pardons-jan-6.html\" >lawlessness<\/a>\u00a0here and around the world<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt 0.5in;\">*The reinstatement of the federal\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/01\/21\/g-s1-44120\/trump-executive-order-executions-resumed-immigrants\" >death penalty<\/a>, an inhumane practice with a long history of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vera.org\/news\/ending-the-death-penalty-is-a-step-toward-racial-justice\" >discrimination<\/a>\u00a0against people of color<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;\">This is not an exhaustive list, but the sources of distress I have highlighted demonstrate the breadth and depth of the current onslaught against values and priorities that we as psychologists hold dear.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;\">As individuals, our circumstances vary widely. At times as fraught as these, those of us who are less burdened by personal or career perils must embrace the heightened responsibilities that come with our privilege. Our professional associations should do the same, recognizing that they fell woefully short during the \u201cwar on terror\u201d when our government and its national security establishment violated the most basic standards of human decency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-indent: 0px; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;\">The fundamentals of our profession call upon us to pursue justice and to cherish human dignity in its diverse forms. Let us therefore join in solidarity and community with all who share these concerns, committing ourselves to collective resistance, reparative action, and resolute support for those whose voices have been muffled or silenced.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Roy J.
