In her hand she held,
\na green leaf from her Tutu’s kukui nut tree.<\/p>\n

It was large and familiar.<\/p>\n

Once, it was a hat, Once a fan,
\nOnce a plate,
\nAnd once it was a boat,
\nfloating her to worlds beyond Ma\u02bbili stream.<\/p>\n

She pressed it to her nose and smelled roasted kukui kernels mixed with the Kai,
\nthe pa\u02bba kai, the i\u02bba.<\/p>\n

She held it up
\nand saw in that mirror
\nthe green-life that was part of her.<\/p>\n

And she began to sing.<\/p>\n

As the designer and facilitator for Building the Beloved Community \u2013 a process that brings ceremony, storytelling, and circles of trust and respect \u2013 Aunty Pua shared Native Hawaiian practices throughout the world to bring healing and reconciliation. She served as the Myles and Zilphia Horton Chair for the Highlander Research and Education Center in Tennessee and as a community scholar in residence at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Hawai\u2019i. Aunty Pua was an ordained Zen Buddhist priest in the International Daihonzan Chozen-ji.<\/em><\/p>\n
