More and more victims are being trafficked every year, across greater distances, with greater violence, for longer periods of time and for greater profit.<\/p>\n<p>From 2020 to 2023, there were more than 200,000 detected victims globally, which is just the tip of the iceberg.<\/p>\n<p>The actual number of unreported cases is believed to be significantly higher.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"view view-property-cards-by-nodequeue view-id-property_cards_by_nodequeue view-display-id-block_5 view-dom-id-621e40ac7ec2b983737d8fc89aec3ff4\">\n<div class=\"view-content\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"views-field views-field-body\">\n<div class=\"field-content\">\n<div class=\"topmargin bottommargin clearfix\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>Organized criminal networks are driving this victimization and exploitation, using migration flows, global supply chains, legal and economic loopholes and digital platforms to facilitate cross-border trafficking on a massive scale.<\/p>\n<p>They profit from forced labour, sexual exploitation and coercion into criminal activities, such as online scams and drug smuggling.<\/p>\n<p>Despite some progress, criminal justice responses fall short in tackling this rapidly evolving crime.\u00a0To end human trafficking, law enforcement must enforce strict laws, conduct proactive investigations, strengthen cross-border cooperation, target criminal finances, and leverage technology to identify and dismantle trafficking networks.<\/p>\n<p>Ensuring justice for survivors requires holding perpetrators accountable and providing a victim-centred approach to protection, support and access to justice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unodc.org\/unodc\/en\/endht\/\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sites\/un2.un.org\/files\/tipday_-_slogan_man.png\" alt=\"figure of man with net over face silhouette\" width=\"377\" height=\"377\" \/><\/a><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unodc.org\/unodc\/en\/endht\/index.html\" >This year\u2019s campaign<\/a> highlights the vital role of law enforcement and the criminal justice system in dismantling organized trafficking networks while ensuring a victim-centred approach.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We particularly encourage law enforcement agencies, including police departments, border security, international agencies, and specialized task forces, to take an active role by utilizing online platforms and conducting in-person outreach at high-traffic areas such as transportation hubs.<\/p>\n<p>This way we can reach a wide audience, raise public awareness and promote reporting channels for suspected trafficking cases. Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers, in their own countries and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Almost every country in the world is affected by trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit or destination for victims.<\/p>\n<p>UNODC, as guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocols thereto, assists States in their efforts to implement the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unodc.org\/unodc\/en\/treaties\/CTOC\/index.html\" >Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons<\/a>\u00a0(Trafficking in Persons Protocol).<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons\u00a0defines Trafficking in Persons as\u00a0the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation.<\/p>\n<p>Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs.<\/p>\n<p>The World Day against Trafficking in Persons was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/undocs.org\/A\/RES\/68\/192\" >A\/RES\/68\/192<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-4\">\n<div class=\"more-info\">\n<h3 id=\"heading-border\">Did you know?<\/h3>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>74% of traffickers operate within organized crime groups.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>In 2022, victims from 162 nationalities were trafficked to 128 different countries.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>About 70% of those investigated, prosecuted and convicted for trafficking in 2022 were men.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>African victims were the most widely trafficked group. patterns and flows at global, regional and national levels.<\/p>\n<p>It covers 156 countries and provides an overview of the response to the trafficking in persons by analysing trafficking cases
