class=\"minimal-share\">Edem Wosornu, Director of Operations and Advocacy for the humanitarian affairs office, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unocha.org\/\" class=\"ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OCHA<\/a><\/strong>, briefed journalists on her recent visit to Sudan and neighbouring Chad \u2013 a critical entry point for aid and a haven for some 850,000 people who have fled fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"minimal-share\">The war erupted in April 2023 and she said it has created one of the world\u2019s largest humanitarian crises, with some 30 million people needing assistance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"minimal-share\">Homes, hospitals and schools have been destroyed, and basic services have ceased, while malnutrition and food insecurity are on the rise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"main-wrapper\" class=\"layout-main-wrapper clearfix\">\n<div id=\"main-container\" class=\"container layout-main-container\">\n<div class=\"row row-offcanvas row-offcanvas-left clearfix\">\n<section class=\"section\">\n<div id=\"block-views-block-content-fields-block-body\" class=\"views-element-container block block-views block-views-block-content-fields-block-body\">\n<div class=\"block-content field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<h2><strong>Aid trucks waiting<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ms. Wosornu voiced concern over the situation in El Fasher, which has been under siege for 500 days, with fresh shelling reported that morning.<\/p>\n<p><em>The North Darfur capital is also in the grip of deadly cholera which \u201cdoesn\u2019t care whether you\u2019re in uniform or a civilian\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She said some 70 trucks from the World Food Programme (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www1.wfp.org\/\" class=\"ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WFP<\/a><\/strong>), the UN Children\u2019s Fund (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/\" class=\"ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>UNICEF<\/strong><\/a>), and the World Health Organization (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/\" class=\"ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>WHO<\/strong><\/a>) are waiting in Nyala, South Darfur, to enter the city.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, two other cities \u2013 Kadugli in South Kordofan state and El Obeid in North Kordofan \u2013 are also <strong>under siege<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have some good news\u201d, Ms. Worsonu said, announcing that UNICEF trucks have delivered assistance to hundreds of thousands of people\u00a0in Kadugli in recent days.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Khartoum now \u2018a ghost town\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The senior OCHA official recalled that Sudan was once the \u201cbreadbasket\u201d of the Horn of Africa, but last year famine conditions were reported in the Zamzam camp in North Darfur.<\/p>\n<p><em>The current lean season finds some 680,000 people nationwide in a state of catastrophic food insecurity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Although fighting has died down in the capital, <strong>Khartoum<\/strong>, the sheer scale of destruction is devastating, she said, with \u201cstreets and buildings littered with explosive remnants of war\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The once vibrant city is now <strong>\u201ccompletely a ghost town\u201d<\/strong> with a \u201cpalpable sense of trauma everywhere\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Wosornu also witnessed signs of hope. She saw \u201ca city trying to come back to life, people sweeping the streets, a population determined to come back to what they once were. But it will take, of course, many, many, many years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While in <strong>Chad<\/strong>, she thanked the authorities for their support, including ensuring that the Adre border with Sudan remains open.<\/p>\n<p>The war has made travel within Sudan extremely difficult, so humanitarian aid has to go from Douala in Cameroon through Chad\u2019s capital, N\u2019Djamena, and onto several more cities before arriving at Adre for entry into Darfur \u2013 <strong>\u201ca mammoth effort\u201d,<\/strong> she said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>More funding and aid access<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ms. Wosornu concluded by making four \u201ckey asks\u201d to the international community, including for sustained improvements in aid access and more funding.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat we need is 55 cents per person, per day.
