She was an ethnic Kurd.\u00a0 The protests began on 3 September 2022 in the Kurdish areas of Iran but soon spread to all ethnic groups and to many parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Women have been a central focus of the social policy of the Iranian Islamic government.\u00a0 Even before coming to power in 1979, Ayatollah Khomeini from his exile in France had said that the overly great liberty of women was a chief obstacle to his policies.\u00a0 Repressive policies against women with compulsory veiling laws were quickly put into place once he came into power.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Woman, Life, Liberty&#8221; became the battle cry of the 2022 protests, and the refusal to have a hijab was the external symbol of the protests. Although the protests were harshly repressed, the Iranian people&#8217;s courage could not be silenced.\u00a0 Since 2022, Iranian society has been significantly modified.\u00a0 There is an\u00a0 increased defiance of women who refuse to wear the mandatory hijab in public.\u00a0 Unveiled women are seen walking through stores\u00a0 and banks.\u00a0 Government leaders have appeared on posters with unveiled women as &#8220;martyrs&#8221; killed in the recent bombing by Israel and the USA.<\/p>\n<p>There are some policymakers in the government of President Masoud Pezeshkian who cautiously propose reforms while hardliners double down on restrictions, and people are arrested, accused of &#8220;propaganda against the state&#8221;.\u00a0 The many socio-economic currents present\u00a0 in Iran\u00a0 today merid being watched closely.<\/p>\n<p><em>______________________________________<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Rene-Wadlow--e1695369695147.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-244689\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Rene-Wadlow--e1695369695147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a> Ren\u00e9 Wadlow is a member of the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/\" >TRANSCEND Network for Peace Development Environment<\/a><em>.
