Then, in the very next sentence, the newspaper lauded the strike at the \u201cheart of Venezuela\u2019s Cartel de los Soles,\u201d as if the two entities were one in the same. The rest of the article addressed the Cartel de los Soles, forgetting that it was TdA that had supposedly been blown out of the water.<\/p>\n<p>The criminal network, we are told, had been \u201cembedded within [Venezuelan President] Nicol\u00e1s Maduro\u2019s regime and accused of moving massive quantities of cocaine overseas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump sees no need to back his claims. His fourth estate stenographer based its investigative reporting on unidentified \u201csources with knowledge of the situation.\u201d The <em>Herald<\/em> revealed that their three anonymous informants knew all about the \u201c\u2018Caribbean Route\u2019 \u2014 long one of the busiest corridors for speedboats ferrying cocaine to Europe and the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Miami-based newspaper claimed, without presenting evidence, that \u201cinside Venezuela, authorities have turned to\u2026extortion of businesses.\u201d But who needs evidence when the US Justice Department had indicted the Venezuelan political leadership as a \u201cnarco-terrorist enterprise\u201d in 2020? Further, Washington placed a $50 million bounty on Maduro this August. If that is not proof of culpability, nothing is.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the Cartel de los Soles, the <em>Herald<\/em> allowed that \u201cMaduro has denied the accusations.\u201d And so has President Gustavo Petro in neighboring Colombia. He <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/petrogustavo\/status\/1959991404450488658\" >observed<\/a> that it \u201cdoes not exist; it is a fictitious excuse used by the extreme right to overthrow governments that do not obey them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recently retired head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Pino Arlacchi, pronounced the cartel \u201ca <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/venezuelanalysis.com\/opinion\/the-great-hoax-against-venezuela-oil-geopolitics-disguised-as-war-on-drugs\/\" >product of Trump\u2019s imagination<\/a>\u2026 useful for justifying sanctions, blockades and threats of military intervention against a country which, incidentally, sits on one of the planet\u2019s largest oil reserves.\u201d Venezuelan analyst Clodovaldo Hern\u00e1ndez <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/venezuelanalysis.com\/analysis\/the-cartel-of-the-suns-leftovers-that-were-never-edible\/\" >described<\/a> the cartel and its alleged connection to Maduro as \u201cnothing more than a reheated dish that was never edible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>False narrative on drugs in the Caribbean<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Casting doubt on Trump\u2019s avowal that the boats were carrying \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sofx.com\/president-trump-address-to-pentagon-leaders-at-marine-corps-base-quantico-full-transcript\/\" >fentanyl mostly<\/a>,\u201d a congressional <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/crs-product\/IF10400?\" >CRS report<\/a> reported that Mexico is the main source of illicit fentanyl entering the US. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/article\/2025\/sep\/22\/Trump-Venezuela-boat-strikes-drugs-trafficking\/\" >PolitiFact<\/a> also found that most fentanyl comes from Mexico. And the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/2024-INCSR-Vol-1-Drug-and-Chemical-Control-Accessible-Version.pdf\" >State Department<\/a>had hitherto mainly described land\/over-the-border routes for fentanyl.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/telesurenglish\/status\/1965217422681444818\" >reports<\/a> from the United Nations, the European Union, and the US Drug Enforcement Agency, Venezuela is essentially free of drug production and processing \u2013 no coca, no marijuana, and certainly no fentanyl. The authoritative UN <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unodc.org\/unodc\/data-and-analysis\/world-drug-report-2025.html\" ><em>2025 World Drug Report<\/em><\/a>identifies Colombia and secondarily Peru and Ecuador as the major coca growers and\/or cocaine producers.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the vast majority of the cocaine traffic is from the Pacific, not from Venezuela\u2019s Caribbean coast, according to the US <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/archive\/ndic\/pubs3\/3300\/cocaine.htm\" >National Drug Threat Assessment<\/a>. The world\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/feature\/stained-with-blood-new-port-brings-violent-drug-cartels-to-ecuador-fishing-town\" >leading cocaine exporter<\/a> is Ecuador, using banana boats owned by the family of Trump\u2019s ally and right-wing president of the country, Daniel Naboa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The war on \u201cterrorism\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <em>Herald<\/em> marveled how Trump dispatched an armada of warships \u2013 destroyers and a nuclear submarine \u2013 plus F-35 stealth jets and 4,500 troops for drug interdiction. In contrast, the knowledgeable military press, such as the US Army-funded <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/branches\/navy\/2025-09-23\/uss-stockdale-navy-presence-caribbean-venezuela-19196878.html\" ><em>Stars and Stripes<\/em><\/a>, skeptically described the deployment as \u201cbringing a howitzer to a knife fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, drug interdiction is a ruse for Washington\u2019s goal of regime-change in Venezuela, according to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/expert-brief\/us-militarys-boat-strike-escalates-tensions-venezuela\" ><em>Council on Foreign Relations<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>US administrations have steadily merged the war on drugs with the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/world\/trump-venezuela-attacks-liberal-order\/\" >war on terror<\/a>, framing Latin American drug trafficking as a national security threat to justify military operations. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov\/news\/releases\/2002\/04\/20020418-6.html\" >George W. Bush<\/a> rebranded Plan Colombia as counter-terrorism, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/views\/2013\/05\/10\/obama-and-militarization-drug-war-mexico-and-central-america\" >Barack Obama<\/a>increased the military build-up.<\/p>\n<p>This laid the present groundwork for Trump, who tied migration to terrorism and cast Venezuelan refugees as a criminal invasion. The president labeled Venezuelan migrants as terrorists to expand executive authority to carry out naval deployments, extrajudicial strikes, and mass deportations. And he weaponized the human rights discourse to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/misionverdad.com\/venezuela\/los-autores-intelectuales-de-la-criminalizacion-del-migrante-venezolano\" >criminalize migrants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Further, Trump <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/03\/invocation-of-the-alien-enemies-act-regarding-the-invasion-of-the-united-states-by-tren-de-aragua\" >invoked<\/a> the 1798 Alien Enemies Act, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/designating-cartels-and-other-organizations-as-foreign-terrorist-organizations-and-specially-designated-global-terrorists\" >designated<\/a> drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, and <a href=\"x-webdoc:\/\/2493697D-A757-4338-9B15-AAAEB396DCFC\/bcnews.go.com\/Politics\/trump-directs-pentagon-prepare-military-options-drug-cartels\/story?id=124481306&amp;utm\" >directed<\/a> the Pentagon to prepare options for military force against cartels. However, conflating \u201corganized crime\/drug cartel\u201d with \u201cterrorism\/wartime enemy\u201d is legally and conceptually problematic.<\/p>\n<p>Such measures not only violate international norms but also amplify a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mintpressnews.com\/us-venezuela-drug-war-claims\/290475\/\" >narco-terror narrative<\/a>. They falsely link the Venezuelan government to major drug trafficking while promoting domestic support for intervention in Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Imperial mission not accomplished<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This latest escalation of the US offensive against Venezuela is an implicit admission that previous efforts have failed to achieve regime change. And it\u2019s not from lack of trying.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/guacamayave.com\/en\/jimmy-story-sanctions-were-designed-to-hurt-the-economy-and-force-maduro-to-negotiate\/\" >revealing interview<\/a>, former US ambassador to Caracas, James Story, confessed that unilateral coercive measure, so-called \u201csanctions,\u201d were employed to asphyxiate the Venezuelan economy. But the economy is recovering, and for the first time since 2020 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/venezuelas-oil-exports-surpass-1-million-bpd-first-time-since-2020-data-shows-2025-10-01\/\" >oil exports surpass<\/a> 1 million bpd. The US embassy, Story admitted, was used to nurture the astroturf opposition. Yet today, Washington\u2019s designated leader of the far right, Mar\u00eda Corina Machado, is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/orinocotribune.com\/venezuela-are-we-taking-maria-corinas-secret-insurrection-plan-seriously\/\" >isolated<\/a>, polling a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/orinocotribune.com\/91-of-venezuelans-consider-oil-to-be-the-real-reason-for-trumps-threats\" >92% disapproval rating<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/orinocotribune.com\/91-of-venezuelans-consider-oil-to-be-the-real-reason-for-trumps-threats\" >people have rallied<\/a> around the Maduro political leadership, which has suffered no defections. The military-civilian union remains unbroken, while Maduro has invoked \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/venezuelanalysis.com\/news\/venezuelas-maduro-moves-to-invoke-emergency-powers-as-us-doubles-down-on-its-aggressive-stance-toward-latin-america\/?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=7541a404-2c8f-4415-8e34-7264c424ece1\" >emergency powers<\/a>.\u201d Literally <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/orinocotribune.com\/venezuela-militia-swells-to-8-million-international-supporters-pledge-to-join\/\" >millions<\/a> have enrolled in the militia to defend their country.<\/p>\n<p>This presents a quandary for the Western press in service of Washington\u2019s prerogatives, because what kind of \u201cdictatorship\u201d risks handing out arms and trains the people in military combat? Coming to the rescue, the twisted minds at <em>BBC<\/em> quote a source claiming that Maduro\u2019s real intent is not to employ these forces in defense but cynically to sacrifice them as a \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c5y5q173053o\" >human shield<\/a>\u201d to increase the human cost of any potential US military action.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the press\u2019s rhetoric of fentanyl and freedom lies its support of the imperial mission to extinguish a sovereign revolution unwilling to submit.
