1 Nov 2025\u00a0<\/em>– A UN General Assembly committee that deals with disarmament has adopted a resolution to keep nuclear weapon systems under human control in a bid to prevent artificial intelligence from using the weapons in an unintended way.<\/p>\n

Mexico and other members of the assembly’s First Committee proposed the resolution to prevent the potential risk of artificial intelligence being incorporated with nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

With the use of AI by the military in mind, the resolution expresses concern that technical issues with artificial intelligence could lead to serious consequences such as the accidental use of nuclear weapons in unintended ways.<\/p>\n

The resolution calls for maintaining human oversight and control within systems that govern nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

The resolution was adopted with 115 countries in favor, while eight countries, including the United States and other nuclear-armed nations, opposed it.<\/p>\n

Japan abstained, saying it took into consideration the balance between opportunity and risk that artificial intelligence brings.<\/p>\n

Daniel Holz, a professor at the University of Chicago in the physics department and also chair of the US science magazine that is behind what’s known as the ‘Doomsday Clock’, says integration of AI technology into nuclear weapons is a terrifying possibility.<\/p>\n

He said that he worries that it is inevitable in some sense unless there is very strong pressure against it. He added that it is important that countries take the issue very seriously.<\/p>\n
