His partner, Hilal Elver \u2014 a distinguished scholar and former UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food \u2014 is no more threatening than he is.<\/p>\n<p id=\"03c8\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Yet when they stepped off their flight at Toronto Pearson Airport, on their way to Ottawa <strong class=\"no hm\">to speak about Gaza<\/strong>, they were taken aside, escorted down a narrow hallway, and placed in a brightly lit secondary inspection room.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d349\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The border agents told them they had been detained<strong class=\"no hm\"> because they posed a \u201cnational security threat to Canada.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"fb49\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Even as the Tribunal they were heading to in Ottawa gathered evidence and testimony, the state sought to preempt its impact at the very border. What followed was an <strong class=\"no hm\">interrogation<\/strong> of Falk and Elver that revealed a troubling conflation of Canada\u2019s national security with ideological alignment to Israel.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6174\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The questions came one after another, circling obsessively around the same forbidden center:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>\u201cWhat exactly will you be saying about Israel in Ottawa?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>\u201cWhy did your UN reports criticize Israeli military actions?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>\u201cHave you been in contact with Palestinian organizations?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>\u201cWhat is your position on the war in Gaza?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>\u201cWho invited you to this Tribunal, and why?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"a179\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The line of questioning was so singularly focused on defending Israeli policy that it betrayed a fundamental confusion of national interests. The agents wanted nothing about Canada \u2014 not a single question about contraband, immigration status, visas, residency, or criminal history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"no hm\">Everything was about Israel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"654c\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Halfway through the four-hour ordeal, the absurdity sharpened into recognition: nothing Falk or Elver had ever written posed any threat to Canada. But everything they had documented about Israeli conduct \u2014 settlement expansion, blockade, collective punishment, starvation \u2014 posed a threat to Israel\u2019s political security, and therefore, in the logic that now governs Canadian institutions, to Canada itself.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4b88\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In that moment, the interrogation ceased to be absurd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"no hm\">It became coherent \u2014 chillingly so<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"f19e\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Canada had collapsed the boundary between its own national security and Israel\u2019s political narrative \u2014 the border itself enforcing it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9200\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This transformation did not happen overnight. It is the product of a political logic constructed over decades.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"0f7c\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\"><strong class=\"no hm\">How Political Loyalty Becomes a Matter of National Security<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"4cbe\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">First, criticism of Israel has been steadily recast as a security issue, rather than a political disagreement. Organizations such as CIJA, B\u2019nai Brith, and the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center \u2014 which explicitly identify as Jewish and advocate for the preservation of Israel as an apartheid Jewish state \u2014 have spent years briefing Canadian politicians, police, and security agencies with the claim that Palestinian solidarity, criticism of Israeli occupation, or support for boycotts constitutes \u201cextremism\u201d or \u201cpotential radicalization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"48e4\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">These same zionist organizations have shaped Canadian security discourse\u00a0in ways that conflate Palestinian advocacy with extremism.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9554\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Second, Canadian governments have elevated support for Israel from a diplomatic position to a pillar of national identity. Israel is framed as a frontline state in the \u201cwar on terror,\u201d a democratic ally in a dangerous world. Once foreign policy is securitized (treated as a national security matter), ordinary political disagreements \u2014 like criticizing Israeli policies \u2014 are portrayed as destabilizing or threatening to Canada itself, even when they clearly pose no real risk.<\/p>\n<p id=\"01b4\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Third, Canadian institutions increasingly outsource their concept of \u201crisk\u201d\u00a0to these advocacy groups. They monitor their cues, amplify their alarms, and follow their frame.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7492\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This posture is rooted in a complex blend of geopolitical alignment, domestic political calculations, and a shared settler-colonial history that makes Canada\u2019s political establishment uniquely sensitive to challenges of Israel\u2019s legitimacy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e4e6\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">We have seen this pattern before. The same choreography that silenced a local activist in Vancouver was now being deployed at the national border against a former UN official. The system, it seems, operates the same waywhether the target is a grassroots organizer or an international jurist.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"b71c\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\"><strong class=\"no hm\">Charlotte Kates: A Domestic Parallel<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">When Vancouver activist Charlotte Kates praised Palestinian resistance at a rally in 2024, nothing happened immediately. Police did not arrest her, prosecutors did not open a file.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a248\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But within hours, B\u2019nai Brith had clipped her speech, declared it a threat, and demanded action. CIJA echoed the alarm. Only then did the Vancouver Police launch a hate-crime investigation, followed by bail conditions barring Kates from attending any rallies at all \u2014 a remarkable prior restraint in a country that claims to champion free expression.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a0c0\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The sequence was unmistakable:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\"><em>these Jewish lobby groups declare a threat<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\"><em>political pressure mounts<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\"><em>security apparatus activates<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"8596\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nr ns nt nv nw nx nz oa ob od oe of oh oi vc oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This is the same choreography that surrounded Falk for over a decade. When he served as UN Special Rapporteur, his reports documenting Israeli violations sparked coordinated denunciations from the same advocacy networks. They repeatedly urged the Canadian government to isolate him, discredit him, or keep him out entirely.<\/p>\n<p id=\"02fe\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">So when Falk arrived in Canada to speak at a Tribunal these groups had already condemned, the border system reacted exactly as it had been trained: it treated him, not as an elderly scholar with a folder of notes, but as an ideological hazard.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"b82b\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\"><strong class=\"no hm\">The Tribunal: What It Sought, What It Found, Why It Matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"6beb\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The Ottawa Tribunal on Canadian Responsibility \u2014 the event Falk and Elver were traveling to \u2014 was a hybrid people\u2019s tribunal, legal inquiry, and moral intervention. Held at the University of Ottawa\u2019s Human Rights Research and Education Centre, it brought together over fifty witnesses: survivors from Gaza, Palestinian legal scholars, Indigenous leaders, international jurists, and Canadian lawyers working on arms exports and sanctions obligations.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bfe9\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The Tribunal stands squarely in the lineage of historic people\u2019s tribunals, translating past lessons into direct scrutiny of Canada\u2019s policies. Its task was explicit: to examine how Canada enables the destruction of Gaza.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bd7a\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Survivors described starvation, displacement, and the annihilation of communities. Experts traced Canadian-made components in Israeli drones and jets. Lawyers detailed Canada\u2019s obligations under the Genocide Convention and its failures to meet them. Indigenous speakers drew parallels between Canada\u2019s own settler-colonial foundations and Israel\u2019s occupation.<\/p>\n<p id=\"b5fd\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Falk articulated the legal framework of third-state responsibility \u2014 the duty of one country not to assist in genocide in another. Elver presented evidence of starvation used as a weapon, a clear violation of international humanitarian law.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d26c\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The Tribunal\u2019s final judgment is still forthcoming. But the record it has produced is already significant: a structured, public, internationally connected archive of Canadian complicity.<\/p>\n<p id=\"33d3\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And it raises the question that haunts every people\u2019s tribunal:<\/p>\n<p id=\"10c8\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Do these efforts matter? Or are they symbolic gestures swallowed by the indifference of power?<\/p>\n<p id=\"2e50\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">History answers decisively.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"0b7f\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\"><strong class=\"no hm\">The Legacy of People\u2019s Tribunals<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"19f3\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">People\u2019s tribunals have long served as <strong class=\"no hm\">moral vanguards<\/strong> ahead of official recognition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"no hm\">The Russell Tribunal on Vietnam<\/strong> reframed U.S. actions as war crimes \u2014 long before mainstream institutions dared to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"no hm\">The Russell Tribunal on Palestine<\/strong> declared Israeli apartheid in 2011 \u2014 ten years before Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International adopted the same framework.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"no hm\">The Tokyo Women\u2019s Tribunal<\/strong> established sexual slavery as a crime against humanity, shaping UN reports and national reparations debates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"no hm\">The International Monsanto Tribunal<\/strong> influenced the UN\u2019s consideration of ecocide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"no hm\">The World Tribunal on Iraq<\/strong> created a powerful, lasting historical record that shaped global public opinion.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2961\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">These tribunals lacked formal authority. But they changed the language, categories, and evidence base through which justice would later be pursued. The Ottawa Tribunal is cut from that lineage.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ff0d\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\"><strong class=\"no hm\">The Impact of This Tribunal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"1591\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The Tribunal produced:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\"><em>survivor testimony that cannot be erased,<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\"><em>legal analysis that will echo in courtrooms and UN submissions,<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\"><em>a public record of Canadian complicity,<\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\"><em>and an international conversation amplified \u2014 ironically \u2014 by the state\u2019s attempt to suppress it.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"188d\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Most Canadians would never have heard of the Tribunal without Falk and Elver\u2019s detention. What the border tried to silence became national news. Their detention provoked a chorus of condemnation that echoed the Tribunal\u2019s own purpose: Canadian Senator Yuen Pau Woo called it \u201cappalling,\u201d Azeezah Kanji called it \u201coutrageous,\u201d and British sociologist Martin Shaw described it as \u201can extraordinary development in the global repression of the Palestinian cause.\u201d Falk himself identified the core motive: a system designed to \u201cpunish those who endeavor to tell the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"214a\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The Tribunal cannot stop the bombs over Gaza, but it can stop the silence that makes them possible. It lays the groundwork for future accountability, shifts the moral terrain beneath political actors who rely on public ignorance, and ensures that when the history of Gaza is written, Canada\u2019s role will not be omitted.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a82b\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But truth does not end with tribunals. What can the average person do in the face of such entrenched power? Not everything \u2014 but not nothing. They can refuse the silence that the security-state narrative depends on. They can circulate tribunal testimony, challenge the framing of Palestinian advocacy as extremism, and create spaces \u2014 in classrooms, unions, community centers, faith circles, and media \u2014 where Canada\u2019s role can no longer hide behind rhetoric. They can support legal efforts pursuing accountability and organizations that monitor the expanding reach of border and security agencies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1219\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">They cannot force the state to reveal its operations \u2014 but they can make secrecy costly. Falk himself could not prevent his detention, but public outrage ensured the attempt at silencing became a public confession. This is the leverage ordinary people retain: the ability to expose the system\u2019s logic and make complicity visible.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bb55\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The border could detain Falk, but not his message. It could hold two scholars for hours, but it could not hold back the truth they carried. And it cannot halt the reckoning that emerges when testimony, law, and collective conscience refuse to be dismissed as a \u201csecurity threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"b9fc\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\"><strong class=\"no hm\">Conclusion: The Real Threat<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"fdab\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What happened to Richard Falk and Hilal Elver in that small border room was not a bureaucratic accident. It was a political act. It revealed a system in which dissent about Israel is treated as a security threat, where Palestinian advocacy is pathologized, and where scrutiny of Canada\u2019s own responsibilities is met with hostility.<\/p>\n<p id=\"62ca\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But the threat they posed was never to Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">It was to <strong class=\"no hm\">complacency.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">To <strong class=\"no hm\">hypocrisy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">To <strong class=\"no hm\">the comfort of not knowing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">To <strong class=\"no hm\">the political immunity<\/strong> that protects powerful states from accountability.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9040\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph nm nn hl no b np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj he bl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In the end, the greatest threat to power is not two distinguished scholars. It is the truth they carry \u2014 and the courage of those willing to hear it.
