The dolphins are getting Alzheimer\u2019s from algae blooms
\ncaused by warming waters and toxic runoff<\/p>\n

and you could see the bloodstains in Sudan
\nfrom space.<\/p>\n

The cobalt is mined by children
\nand the music is made by robots<\/p>\n

and the grownups are wondering
\nwhere the fireflies went.<\/p>\n

It is an elephant with an eyepatch and a prosthetic leg.
\nIt\u2019s a freshly emptied bed in the nursing home.<\/p>\n

A hand offers you pills to numb the dissonance,
\nbut you swat it away and howl naked in the thorns.<\/p>\n

Somewhere there\u2019s an ibis on a piano
\nin a junkyard in the rain.<\/p>\n

Somewhere else there\u2019s a small boy
\nwho has just learned the word \u201ctreasure\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook! Buried treasure!\u201d he tells his dad.
\n\u201cNo. That\u2019s just glass worn smooth by the sea.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that treasure?\u201d
\n\u201cNo, that\u2019s just a shiny candy wrapper
\nshimmering in the sun.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOoh! THIS is treasure!\u201d
\n\u201cNo that\u2019s garbage. Put it down.\u201d<\/p>\n

And the boy\u2019s vision changes
\nand he no longer sees the treasure in things.<\/p>\n

He runs to join his dad
\nand they walk together down the shore<\/p>\n

through a dying world
\nof fading wonder
\nfull of worthless beach trash.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is wrong,\u201d you whisper
\nas the blood leaves your body.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is treasure everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n
