{"id":309168,"date":"2025-12-08T12:00:58","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T12:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=309168"},"modified":"2025-12-05T06:26:25","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T06:26:25","slug":"too-heavy-to-bear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2025\/12\/too-heavy-to-bear\/","title":{"rendered":"Too Heavy to Bear"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em>Inspired by the Landslides in Sri Lanka\u2019s Mountains &#8211; 2 Dec 2025<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the pearl of the Indian Ocean,<br \/>\nA thousand blue hills once kissed the sky\u2014<br \/>\nuntil suddenly they slipped,<br \/>\nthey broke, they fell.<br \/>\nThey said it was the rain,<br \/>\nthey said it was the cyclone,<br \/>\nThey said it was a storm.<br \/>\nBut all were lies.<br \/>\nThe truth was simpler\u2014<br \/>\nthey could bear no more.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of thousands of lives<br \/>\nwere taken.<br \/>\nThe mountains watched it all.<br \/>\nTamil shops set ablaze,<br \/>\nmountains of books turned to ash\u2014<br \/>\nthe hills stood silent,<br \/>\nbearing witness,<br \/>\nbearing sorrow,<br \/>\nuntil at last<br \/>\nthey, too, collapsed in silence.<\/p>\n<p>Lives burned beside piles of tires,<br \/>\nbodies drifting down swollen rivers,<br \/>\neyes torn,<br \/>\nnails ripped,<br \/>\nhell sealed in hidden chambers.<br \/>\nThe mountains carried that grief<br \/>\nfor years uncounted.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath every army camp<br \/>\nlay buried the quiet truth\u2014<br \/>\nmass graves masked by bulldozers<br \/>\nthat erased whole villages.<br \/>\nStill the mountains held the pain<br \/>\nwithout a cry.<\/p>\n<p>When the sea rose up to the heavens,<br \/>\ndevouring thousands in a single breath,<br \/>\na wonder remained:<br \/>\nthe hills did not crumble.<\/p>\n<p>Seyas, Vidyas,<br \/>\nShobs, Krishanthis\u2014<br \/>\nand tens of thousands more,<br \/>\nwomen waiting helpless<br \/>\nbefore violation.<br \/>\nThe mountains saw.<br \/>\nThe mountains watched.<br \/>\nThe mountains endured their agony.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of lives<br \/>\nenslaved under the tea leaves<br \/>\nFor two hundred years<br \/>\nThe mountains witnessed<br \/>\ndark cracked line- rooms<br \/>\nMountains wanted to cry<\/p>\n<p>The rulers devoured a nation<br \/>\nand lived without shame.<br \/>\nThe mountains bore witness<br \/>\nas children starved<br \/>\non a ruined land<br \/>\nas mothers lifted their little ones<br \/>\nand set them gently<br \/>\ninto the dark river.<br \/>\nThe mountains held that sorrow too.<\/p>\n<p>For decades<br \/>\nthey carried and carried<br \/>\nthe weight of a paradise<br \/>\ndrenched in tears.<br \/>\nThey watched everything<br \/>\nunfold.<\/p>\n<p>At last,<br \/>\nthe mountains slid\u2014<br \/>\nnot for rain,<br \/>\nnor cyclone,<br \/>\nnor storm,<br \/>\nbut because the grief they held<br \/>\nbecame too heavy<br \/>\nfor stone to bear.<\/p>\n<p>They said it was the weather.<br \/>\nThey said it was the flood.<br \/>\nBut there were lies.<br \/>\nThe mountains simply<br \/>\ncould bear no more.<\/p>\n<p>____________________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Sanjeewani-Rupasinghe.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-309170 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Sanjeewani-Rupasinghe-e1764915618682.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"80\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>Sanjeewani Rupasinghe is a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka.
