The European Parliament urged the European Commission and the Council of the EU to determine concrete measures to support Greenland and Denmark in the face of US pressure.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

14 Jan 2026\u00a0<\/em>–\u00a0The European Parliament issued a formal statement strongly condemning the declarations made by the administration of US President Donald Trump regarding Greenland, calling them \u201ca blatant challenge to international law,\u201d the principles of the UN Charter, and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a NATO ally.<\/p>\n

The European institution stressed that such statements are \u201cunacceptable and inadmissible in relations between democratic partners.\u201d<\/p>\n

The European Parliament recalled that the United States signed an agreement with Denmark in 1916 recognizing the latter\u2019s full sovereignty over Greenland, and emphasized that \u201cexternal attempts to alter the status quo are unacceptable.\u201d In this context, it urged the European Commission and the Council of the European Union to determine concrete measures to support Greenland and Denmark in the face of recent political pressure.<\/p>\n

The Declarations Trump\u2019s repeated statements on January 9, in which he expressed his intention to bring Greenland \u201cunder US control, by hook or by crook,\u201d have generated a wave of international responses.<\/p>\n

Greenland\u2019s inhabitants issued a joint declaration that same day, in which the five parties represented in the Inatsisartut (Parliament) reaffirmed that \u201cthey do not want to be Americans, nor Danish, only Greenlanders,\u201d and demanded that their right to self-determination be respected without external interference.<\/p>\n
