Here are just a few\u2026 Which other ones do you have experience with?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Who says that violence is cooler and more fun than peace? Sure, with all the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/stories\/editorials\/2012\/12\/28\/glorification-of-violence-is-harmful.html\"  target=\"_blank\">violence glorified<\/a> in movies, TV shows, and video games, by toy guns and action hero dolls it\u2019s easy to see how violence has been made more attractive and why it\u2019s the \u201ceasy\u201d alternative to use in case of conflict. But there is actually a growing body of games and activities for peace, whether they are a fun alternative to violent games or teach concrete peacebuilding skills.<\/p>\n<p>One game that has gotten a lot of visibility lately is the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldpeacegame.org\/\" >World Peace Game<\/a> that John Hunter designed to play with his 4<sup>th<\/sup> grade students. See his TED talk below.<\/p>\n<p>But if you don\u2019t have time to re-create Hunter\u2019s 3-dimensional game board, check out <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.barcelonavoluntaria.org\/\" >Fundacio Catalunya Voluntaria<\/a>\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/peacebag.org\/articles\/toolkit-part5.html\" >Peace Bag<\/a>.\u00a0 The online toolkit offers over 30 modules of games that teach peace. They vary from ice-breakers, creative and physical exercises to simulations. Take for example \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/peacebag.org\/articles\/toolkit-p5-dowehave.html\" >Do We Have Alternatives?<\/a>\u201d, a simulation that focuses on bullying. In the first part of the exercise, participants play out different scenarios that portray various aspects of bullying. This role-play not only demonstrates a range of bullying behaviors, but also helps identify points of intervention. Then the game changes gears as participants discuss \u201creal-life\u201d scenarios and debate some common ideas about bullying and peace. Just like when young children play \u201chouse\u201d or \u201cdoctor-patient\u201d, this kind of game helps participants \u201cpre-hearse\u201d scenarios that they may well come up against in real life, whether as a perpetrator, victim or by-stander.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, games and simulations can be such powerful learning tools that the scholarly journal \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/sag.sagepub.com\/content\/current\" >Simulation &amp; Gaming<\/a>\u201d dedicated its current issue (published in Feb. 2013) to simulation, games and peace. The peer-reviewed articles discuss everything from how these types of games might <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/sag.sagepub.com\/content\/44\/1\/27.abstract\" >influence policy<\/a> to how to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/sag.sagepub.com\/content\/44\/1\/36.abstract\" >design peace games<\/a>. \u00a0While reading through these academic articles might not be everyone\u2019s idea of fun, knowing that the topic is being researched certainly gives credence to the fact that peace can come through games and that games can teach peace.<\/p>\n<p>If you can\u2019t find what you\u2019re looking for in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/peacebag.org\/articles\/toolkit-part5.html\" >Peace Bag<\/a>, they\u2019ve been nice enough to provide links to additional materials, including the Council of Europe\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.coe.int\/t\/dg4\/youth\/Training\/Training_courses\/HRE_Youth_Programme_en.asp\" >Young People Building Europe<\/a> page which provides links to 4 additional websites with modules on games for peace.
