style=\"text-align: center;\">Da\u2019am\u012bs al-Jannah<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I just saw<br \/>\nthe most civilized scene of the war.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A cemetery.<br \/>\nNeatly organized.<br \/>\nEfficient.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">More than <strong>160 schoolgirls<\/strong>.<br \/>\nTen years old.<br \/>\nSome younger.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Birds of paradise &#8211;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Da\u2019am\u012bs al-Jannah<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The graves are small.<br \/>\nVery small.<br \/>\nBecause apparently the future<br \/>\ncomes in <strong>child-size packaging<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Da\u2019am\u012bs al-Jannah<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">They lie there now\u2014<br \/>\ntiny bodies folded into white fabrics,<br \/>\nlined up like a shipment<br \/>\nthat arrived damaged.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Da\u2019am\u012bs al-Jannah<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Minab.<br \/>\nTwenty kilometers from the Gulf of Oman.<br \/>\nAn ordinary school morning<br \/>\ninterrupted by the sound<br \/>\nof <strong>precision democracy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">You see,<br \/>\nwhen bombs fall from advanced civilizations<br \/>\nthey are called <strong>strategic errors<\/strong>,<br \/>\nnever what they actually are.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Da\u2019am\u012bs al-Jannah<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Somewhere<br \/>\na father woke up this morning<br \/>\nto silence in his daughter\u2019s room.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Somewhere<br \/>\na mother is still holding<br \/>\na pair of shoes<br \/>\nthat will never grow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Da\u2019am\u012bs al-Jannah<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But don\u2019t worry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>UNESCO has tweeted its shock.<\/strong><br \/>\nThe algorithm has registered sadness.<br \/>\nDiplomacy is deeply concerned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The palaces say<br \/>\nthere might be an investigation<br \/>\nto determine whether the bomb<br \/>\nbelonged to them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Apparently, missiles<br \/>\nsometimes wander off<br \/>\nlike confused tourists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Kings say nothing<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The princes say nothing<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Presidents say nothing.<br \/>\nThe Prime Ministers say nothing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Silence,<br \/>\nthe most reliable weapon<br \/>\nin international politics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Meanwhile<br \/>\nWestern media holds a panel discussion:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>\u201cAre 160 dead children fake news?\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Because the first reflex<br \/>\nof modern journalism<br \/>\nis not grief.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>It is <strong>verification of the inconvenience<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Imagine the opposite scene\u2014<br \/>\n160 little girls<br \/>\nunder the soil of Paris<br \/>\nor London<br \/>\nor Boston.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The sky would tear open with outrage.<br \/>\nFlags would tremble.<br \/>\nTelevision studios would cry<br \/>\nfor weeks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But geography<br \/>\nis the oldest editor in the newsroom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Some children die<br \/>\nas tragedies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Others die<br \/>\n<em><strong>as footnotes.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Quite symbolic: the entity\u2019s first strike<br \/>\nfalls on the children\u2014<br \/>\nas if to say,<br \/>\n<em>you are the last generation<br \/>\nallowed to breathe on this land.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Da\u2019am\u012bs al-Jannah<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And those beautiful humanitarian principles<br \/>\nwe hear about so often\u2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">they are like curtains<br \/>\nin the palace of power.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Pulled open<br \/>\nwhen the light is flattering.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Closed quickly<br \/>\nwhen the room is covered in blood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But tonight<br \/>\nthose 160 small bodies<br \/>\nhave torn the fabric.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">For a moment<br \/>\nthe mask slipped.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And behind the speeches<br \/>\nbehind the values<br \/>\nbehind the press conferences<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">we saw it clearly:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Humanism<br \/>\nwith a price tag.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Empathy<br \/>\nwith export restrictions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And children<br \/>\nwho had the terrible mistake<br \/>\nof being born<br \/>\non the wrong side<br \/>\nof the moral map.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">After that,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">nothing<br \/>\nsurprises me anymore.<\/p>\n<p><em>____________________________________________<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><a
