However, the ceasefire is fragile. The related Israeli attacks on Lebanon continue, and Iranian missiles continue to be fired at the Gulf States. Thus, the AWC urges all parties to cease hostilities fully.

Within Iran, there has been active mobilization on the part of people, some of whom are opposed to the basic policies of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. People have created “human chains” around buildings and residential areas hopeful to protect them from bombing. These public “sit-ins” were especially strong when there was a fear of “Back to the Stone Age” attacks from U.S. military forces. Within Iran, there has been a large displacement of people, as persons flee cities that might be bombed.

Within the U.S.A. there has been increasing protests concerning the war on Iran both in public demonstrations and in voices in Congress.

The crack in the violence may not last beyond the two weeks of the ceasefire. Thus we must act for positive actions now and keep what pressure we can develop on both Washington and Tehran.

______________________________________

René Wadlow is a member of the TRANSCEND Network for Peace Development Environment.
