organisers.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>17 Jun 2026\u00a0<\/em>&#8211;\u00a0An Israeli real estate event in north London appears to have advertised the sale of land in Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2026\/jun\/13\/uk-london-real-estate-west-bank-israel-settlements\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">despite previous denials<\/a> that illegal settlement properties would be marketed at the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Pamphlets shared with the Guardian from the event on Sunday showed real estate projects in Ma\u2019ale Adumim, Givat Ze\u2019ev, Kfar Eldad and Teneh Omarim in the occupied <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/west-bank\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">West Bank<\/a>, as well as Ramat Eshkol and Givat Hamatos in East Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The event was held after more than 100 UK lawmakers as well as civil society organisations had called for its cancellation, saying it was inconsistent with the government\u2019s obligations under international law as well as prima facie case at the very least that people were advertising land in illegal settlements and that is contrary to law, and the government needs to act,\u201d said Andy McDonald MP, co-chair of the British-Palestine all-party parliamentary group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last week, McDonald wrote a letter to the foreign secretary <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2026\/jun\/13\/uk-london-real-estate-west-bank-israel-settlements\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">signed by 101 politicians<\/a> saying that the event was \u201cembedded in Israel\u2019s project of colonial expansion\u201d and calling on the government to stop it from going ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Concerns were also raised beforehand by the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, who spoke to the Metropolitan police and said he was informed that any allegations of criminality over the unlawful sale of property at the event would be assessed with a view to investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Met declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The London event was the final stop in a series of international roadshows \u2013 after Toronto and New York \u2013 which had appeared to advertise the sale of land in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, and invited individuals to \u201cexplore the best Anglo class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The event had invited people to register their interest in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/may\/29\/un-israel-russia-blacklist-sexual-violence-conflict\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">Gush Etzion<\/a>, an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank, which the UK government considers an illegal settlement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Organisers had previously denied claims that the event would feature land for sale in the West Bank, calling the allegations \u201cridiculous\u201d and \u201cmotivated by anti-Israeli and terrorist supporters\u201d, and said exhibitors would provide information about properties and projects within the green line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Tuesday, organisers apologised for the \u201cerror\u201d in event brochures, after concerns were raised in parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNo one at the event promoted or spoke about properties in the \u2018disputed territories\u2019, such as Givat Ze\u2019ev or Kfar Eldad. Their mention in the event brochure was made in error for which we apologise,\u201d organisers <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishnews.co.uk\/organisers-apologise-for-west-bank-listing-in-israeli-property-event-brochure\/\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">told the Jewish News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The website for the 2025 event that mentioned Gush Etzion has since been taken down, while mention of the settlement on the 2026 event page was removed after concerns were raised publicly. It also included a map of the territory featuring no delineation of Gaza and the occupied West Bank, as well as Syria\u2019s Golan Heights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHow is it that this government fails even to prevent the marketing of illegal property in this country and still fails to take action?\u201d Ellie Chowns asked the foreign secretary, Yvette Cooper, in the Commons on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It is understood that the Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer wrote to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/advertising\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Advertising<\/a> Standards Authority (ASA) on Sunday, requesting that evidence of advertising or promoting property in illegal settlements be scrutinised under UK law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe have asked them now to urgently look into this,\u201d Cooper said on Tuesday. \u201cIt is extremely important that those standards are met in the UK, and that is exactly why we have raised this so seriously with the ASA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The ASA told the Guardian it had received the letter from the government, but had not received any advertising complaints. The government would, quite rightly, come down on that like a ton of bricks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe appear to be completely inconsistent in applying international humanitarian law when it comes to Israel\u2019s egregious behaviours, and that is why so many people in this country are angry and losing faith in the current leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The event in London took place as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/14\/settlers-violence-ethnic-cleansing-west-bank-village\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">settler violence in the West Bank<\/a> has reached unprecedented levels, and as a coalition of western countries \u2013 including the UK, France, Canada, Germany and Italy \u2013 called for an end to the construction of Israeli settlements it says <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/may\/23\/albanese-joins-coalition-of-nations-calling-for-an-end-to-israeli-settlement-expansion-in-the-west-bank-ntwnfb\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">breach international law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last week, the UK, along with other western powers, announced it was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/jun\/09\/uk-imposes-sanctions-firms-enabling-settler-violence-west-bank\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">imposing sanctions on six firms and one individual<\/a> for enabling and financing the recent surge in settler violence in the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, it fell short of banning trade with illegal Israeli settlements, something that more than 140 Labour MPs, including the chairs of every Labour-led select committee, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jun\/07\/uk-sanctions-israel-deter-proposed-west-bank-settlement-palestine\"  data-link-name=\"in body link\">called on the government to do<\/a> earlier this month .<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThey\u2019re not inflicting any pain on Israel sufficient to get them to change course,\u201d said McDonald. \u201cWe don\u2019t have to be complicit in it, we can set out the standards that we adhere to and not murderous war crimes being perpetrated in the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dora, who asked to withhold her surname, attended Sunday\u2019s event undercover with other members of the group Jewish Anti-Zionist Action. \u201cI went in there with the objective of collecting evidence of illegal land sale,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After being kicked out of the event, she joined a protest outside the venue, during which 14 people were arrested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cCondemnation from the government is just never enough,\u201d she added. \u201cNothing\u2019s going to change if there\u2019s no foreign intervention, if there\u2019s no sanctions, if there\u2019s nothing material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It is understood that the Charity Commission has not opened a compliance case or a statutory inquiry into the incident. A spokesperson said: \u201cWe are assessing concerns raised with us about an event held at a synagogue affiliated with United Synagogue. Our assessment will determine what regulatory role there is, if any, for the commission. In line with our guidance, the charity has submitted a serious incident report relating to concerns raised about the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A source at the synagogue said the event was a third-party hire and due diligence beforehand confirmed that all properties being marketed were legal in English law.
