It can run at speeds of up to 75 kph (47 mph) and carry a maximum of about 2,600 passengers, railway officials said.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/narendra-modi\" class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"  data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/a><\/span> inaugurated the \u201cNaMo Green Rail\u201d at Haryana\u2019s Jind railway station on Friday. \u201cNaMo\u201d is a common abbreviation of Modi\u2019s first and last names.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a very significant day in the direction of self-reliant India and sustainable development,\u201d Modi said in a post on X.<\/p>\n<p>The pilot project includes hydrogen storage and refueling infrastructure to test the use of the technology in India\u2019s rail network, according to officials.<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, producing water vapor as the only direct emission. <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-germany-government-and-politics-b96b031cfeb12ea69ae078664b2eb6c4\" class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"  data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">Several other countries<\/a><\/span> have introduced hydrogen-powered trains as an alternative to diesel on routes that are not fully electrified.<\/p>\n<p>The launch is part of India\u2019s broader efforts to develop <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-india-business-climate-and-environment-2331ebc2e2d5bfce16452865b4e6673c\" class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"  data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">green hydrogen<\/a><\/span> and reduce carbon emissions.
