{"id":318942,"date":"2026-08-03T12:00:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T11:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=318942"},"modified":"2026-07-31T18:03:31","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T17:03:31","slug":"world-citizens-oppose-chinas-ethnic-unity-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2026\/08\/world-citizens-oppose-chinas-ethnic-unity-law\/","title":{"rendered":"World Citizens Oppose China&#8217;s Ethnic Unity Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>30 Jul 2026 &#8211; <\/em>The Chinese Government limits ethnic minorities with a new Ethnic Unity law which expands state control over identity, culture, and religious practice.\u00a0 The Ethnic Unity Law came into\u00a0 \u00a0force on 1 July 2026.\u00a0 To protest the Ethnic Unity Law, Lobga\u00a0Rangzen, a 52-year-old Tibetan activist made a sacrificial death at the doors of the United Nations in New York.<\/p>\n<p>The protection of the way of life of ethnic minorities is an issue in many countries. On the one hand minorities must be protected; on the other hand, minorities must not be relegated to folklore to be looked at by tourists.\u00a0 Finding the proper balance is not easy.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese Government presents one extreme position in its effort to mold large ethnic minorities such as the Tibetans into what the government considers to be Chinese identity.<\/p>\n<p>The Association of World Citizens has appealed to the Chinese authorities to reconsider its policies and to modify or abolish its Ethnic Unity Law.\u00a0 For the moment, the authorities have taken no action despite protests by other human rights action groups.
