We can make a home here.
\nIn these ruins.
\nIn this shattered civilization
\nfull of walking autopsies
\nwhere every twinkle in the night sky
\nis an Elon Musk satellite.<\/p>\n

Life can still thrive here.
\nEven in the Anthropocene.
\nEven in the middle
\nof secular Armageddon.
\nThere is still moss
\nin the cracks of the parking lot.
\nThere are still pigeons
\nroosting in the rafters.<\/p>\n

We can make a nest here, too,
\nout of the plastics and the packaging,
\nout of the shell casings
\nand the trillions of chicken bones.
\nWe can rake it into a pile
\nand lay listening to the ghosts
\nof the extinct megafauna
\nand get haunted by the spirits
\nof the forests that used to be.<\/p>\n

It is good to breathe deeply
\nof the fumes of this wasteland.
\nThe air still crackles
\nwith strange and crooked sorcery.
\nThe earth is still packed full
\nof winking Buddhas
\ninside winking Buddhas.
\nHe wears a hazmat suit these days
\n(he\u2019s not an idiot),
\nbut you can still see him winking
\nin the iridescent petrol puddles,
\nand in the shopping cart saints
\non the wounded sidewalks,
\nand even in the shark-eyed stare
\nof the war pundits on Fox News.<\/p>\n

Did you know they\u2019ve discovered
\na type of fungus in Chernobyl
\nwhich feeds on the radiation there?
\nWhen I first learned this I fell to my knees
\nand wept tears of wonder and joy.
\nThe water poured from my seaweed head
\nand washed cigarette butts
\ndown the gutter.<\/p>\n

We are swimming in an ocean of miracles.
\nWe are living on a giant cocoon.
\nWe have barely begun
\nto scratch the surface of this world.
\nEvery moment is a leap
\ninto the great Unknown.<\/p>\n

I kneel before the black mold in Chernobyl.<\/p>\n

An angel egg is beginning to hatch.<\/p>\n
