When we arrived at the port of Ancona
\nA crowd was waiting with torches and banners,
\nWith hugs and kisses. See you! Goodbye!
\nWe’ll meet up again somewhere, sometime!<\/p>\n
Then I’m back on my own and I feel for the first time
\nA great desire to burst into tears.
\nTenderness and remorse well up from inside
\nAnd a sense of how little we were able to sow,
\nAnd how long is the way we still have to go.<\/p>\n
Will the seed of non-violence truly take root?
\nWill it become the approach of the future?
\nIs it possible to bring about change in the world
\nThrough the simple actions of those without arms?<\/p>\n
When the institutions show no signs of acting,
\nIs it really possible for people on their own
\nTo organise themselves and be
\nA thorn in the side of those who wield power?<\/p>\n
Till when shall the culture of non-violence be second?
\nWill this enterprise contribute to producing a change?
\nWhy did the media that invaded Somalia
\nAt the service of scenes of death and destruction
\nHardly mention the incredible scenes of peace?<\/p>\n
In this dreadful war who is wrong, who is right?
\nAs exporters of arms how much are we to blame
\nFor the rabid barbarities being carried out
\nOn the old and young in the land of Bosnia?<\/p>\n
Tonight I am too tired to answer those questions,
\nFor now I shall lull myself to sleep
\nWith a hope, an irrepressible hope:
\nIf the poor should want, things will change.
