Cuban deputy foreign minister Abelardo Moreno said that his country will propose the Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, to take place January 28 and 29 [2014] in Havana, to declare this region a peace zone.<\/p>\n
Moreno explained that for some years now, Latin America and the Caribbean is a zone free of nuclear weapons, since the Tlatelolco treaty was signed by 33 countries of the region. However, we think it is not enough, Moreno told reporters.<\/p>\n
The Summit’s agenda will also include the Argentinean claim over the Malvinas islands, the over-50-year US economic, financial and commercial blockade of Cuba, the fight on terrorism, the role of transnational companies in this part of the world, cultural policies, among other important issues.<\/p>\n
The summit will be attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and by the general secretary of the Organization of American States, Jose Miguel Insulza.<\/p>\n
Cuba will pass the rotating presidency of the bloc to Costa Rica, while Venezuela will propose the membership of Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n
